Nov 28, 2012 - Phu Quoc

It has been some time since I have been able to get to a computer to post. My last posting in was in Nha Trang. My time ended there on the 22nd. I opted to book a 45 min flight for $45.00 as apposed to the 18 hour train for $20.00 to Ho Chi Min City to meet up with my sister Leslie. Once in Ho Chi Min I checked in to the Intercontinental Hotel and took a walk around. I checked out a few sites and waited for Les to arrive. Once she got in we walked to the river and had dinner. Ho Chi Min is like every other large city. Lots of people, shops...

Aug 22, 2012 - RnR on Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island is a sparkling slice of paradise in the sheltered waters of the Gulf of Thailand. It is mountainous and forested with secluded beaches to explore. The seafood at the night markets was very impressive, a lot of it was still alive and there were all sorts of prawns, scallops, crustaceans, sea snails, sea urchins and fish. The island is famous for its pepper and its fish sauce. The Vietnamese like to use fish sauce in the same way as the Chinese use soy sauce, it is made using only 'long jaw' anchovies. The island is very...

Aug 21, 2012 - Can Tho - Phu Quoc

After breakfast we ventured on to the mighty Mekong for a boat cruise to Cai Rang floating market for a view of daily life along the Mekong canals. This isn't a tourist market but rather a market for the locals who live along the Mekong canals to buy and sell supplies. We visited a rice husking mill and a rice noodle making shop. While it was very interesting we were most relieved to learn that both outlets cater to the local market only. The sanitation and hygiene fell well short of Australian standards and alas so did the workers' safety...

Jun 16, 2012 - Phu Quoc Island

I have spent the last two days on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc which lies about 25 miles (45km) off the coast in the Gulf of Thailand. Phu Quoc is known for it's pretty beaches and, though construction has begun on an international airport, it is still pretty undeveloped. I stayed in a nice little bungalow just off of the beach for $10 per night and explored the island both by walking the beach and by traveling with a motorbike to some of the more remote areas. As happened once before in Cambodia, I was again fortunate enough to have...

A Whole New World

Jan 12, 2012 - Lazy days on Phu Quoc Island

8th January Flew on a propellor aeroplane to Phu Quoc Island. Vietnam are billing this place as the next Pu Ket and it's a very popular place to come with accommodation and flights being scarce. We booked one of the only nice looking, affordable places left and when it came to the transfer from the airport we understood why. We are in the last place before the national park begins and it is miles from the airport along dirt roads, fortunately we met another English couple and shared the cab with them. We arrive and the first things you...

Nov 8, 2011 - Phu Quoc Island

Nov 2 – Today I was on the Superdong Express. The ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc. There are 3 Superdongs by the way. While waiting for the ferry I befriended Sonja and Bishman (Hope I got the spelling right), two travellers from Germany. Once arrived at the island port, it was funny to watch all the locals get in buses, cabs, and scooters and get out of there while we haggle and reduce an overcharged price for transportation. After the worst road I have ever travelled I arrived at the Moon Resort on Long Beach. I checked in and they...

Mar 11, 2011 - Das wars dann also ....
