Mar 27, 2018 - Northern Vietnam -- SaPa, Ha Long Bay and Hanoi

Planes, trains and automobiles in one day! We had a short stopover in Hanoi after flying in from Hue before boarding our overnight Orient Express to SaPa in the north. We had the deluxe sleeper cabin for two. Sadly, it was NOT the luxurious and exotic Orient Express that you may be thinking of...this train was fairly rustic and shared toilet but at least it was private! We arrived into Loa Cai station at 6am, met our guide and driver then proceeded to drive 40 km uphill and harrowing switchback roads to SaPa. It was quite an investment in...

Mar 14, 2018 - Robin #3 Jungle walk and Topas Mountain Lodge

It is the middle of the night - or morning if we were home - and we are both up writing. Trying to chronically our activities and catch up with our thoughts. Today we woke to rumbling thunder followed by a downpour. I enjoyed being close to the storm; hearing, smelling and feeling it in a way you can only when you are in nature. Fortunately, it subsided in time for our hike through the valley to a waterfall. In the beginning all was in mist. As it slowly cleared terraced mountains, farms, storage shacks, thin waterfalls the length of the...

Mar 13, 2018 - Robin # 2

Robin. #2. The Mountains A long 5 hr ride by van brought us well into the mountains to visit the Red Dao hill tribe. We transferred from van to car, then had to walk the last leg of the trip while our luggage was tied to the back seat of a motor scooter. We were to learn that pretty much anything can be transported in this fashion. The Nam Chang Riverside Lodge is a rustic remote jungle lodge in the village and is run by this hill tribe. It is beside a river and we crossed a suspension bridge to get there. Lunch was a few tasty fresh,...

Mar 12, 2018 - Steven Hanoi and Nam Cang Riverside Lodge

March 11 This first day is, as first days always are, a day of displacement and settling in, a day of opening, a day of over-stimulation, a day of unraveling. We try to a make it a day of senses and making sense, and we're doing okay with that. It is so hard to stay open to a new world, so full of new contexts and new behaviors, signs, wonders, meanings. I begin to shutdown, say to myself, wait, I need to absorb this before I can take that in. and it's true, sometimes we need silence, at least a quiet place, away from the new and...

Mar 11, 2018 - Steven's First Real Entry

Today it's Tuesday, March 13. We flew out of JFK at 9 pm March 9, landed in Qatar on March 10, and 2 hours or so later, flew to Hanoi, where we landed early in the morning on March 11. I write this out in detail because it's impossible to believe. We've seen so much and done so much in a place so different and so familiar that I can hardly begin to describe or react to anything. At the beginning, then. What do I mean by different and familiar? Certainly the language people speak, the sound and the rhythm of it, is new. Hanoi was a mixture...

Mar 10, 2018 - Robin #1. Arrival and Hanoi

Well, it is day 4 of our adventure and I am finally ready to start writing. Getting here was long and tiring but not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. A 12 1/2 hr flight to Dohu Qatar an another 8 1/2 to Hanoi, both on Qatar Airlines. I plan on only flying Qatar from now on; comfortable seats with room so my knees didn't even graze the seat in front of me, real food, and gracious service by beautiful flight attendants. With the help of Ambien I had a good 6 hr sleep. The Dohu airport is very large, elegant and sleekly modern. It is...

Jan 24, 2018 - Vietnam Part Two

Vietnam Part two We left Phnom Penh by plane and flew via Ho Chi Minh to Da Nang which is central Vietnam. Our only previous knowledge of Da Nang was from guidebooks and the more recent references to it as a strong hold during the American war and as such a recipient of Agent Orange. Da Nang is now one of the fastest developing towns I have seen for sometime. It has a wheel which makes the London eye look like a Childs model and every international hotel chain has a huge estate or is currently building one. We were staying in a homestay...

Jan 24, 2018 - Vietnam-2nd time around

Vietnam: Hoi An, Ha Noi and Ha Long Bay 11th – 19th January Our visit to Cambodia and to Vietnam, to date had been organised and led by All Points East. We had mixed feelings about being on an organised tour, even though we were the only group members for all but five nights. The other participant, who left us to join a tour of Laos and Myanmar, would really need a section all to herself as she was quite mad, in that her grip on reality was quite tenuous. She purported to be a travel guide with experience in 103 countries, but could not...

Aug 24, 2017 - Hanoi and Halong Bay, Vietnam

With a short stopover in Singapore, we arrived in hot and humid Hanoi, met by a driver and limo and taken to the fabulous Pan Pacific Hotel in Hanoi. By the time we had settled in, time for dinner then pretty early bed, having been up for about 38 hours!! The view from our room is just gorgeous - out over the two lakes to the City itself, so night views with all the nights, are fabulous. We had a full day tour of the City booked - saw so much, walked many kms, had a wonderful lunch at a great Restaurant as part of the tour, we ridden...

Jul 12, 2017 - Druk dagje Hanoi
