Jul 8, 2011 - Vietnam: Where the Spiders Wear Nikes

We spent today going to the heavenly caves in northern Vietnam. Let me tell ya what this place lived up to its name. It was discovered in 2005 by a Chinese medicine man looking for a particular plant or leaf or something. When he was sitting down for a break he noticed a cool breeze coming from behind you. Believe it or not cool breeze’s are extremely hard to come by over here so he must have thought he had died and gone to heaven…which might be where the name came from. Anywho he did some exploring and it turns out he discovered the...

Oct 18, 2010 - Hoehlenforscher

Oct 6, 2008 - Dong Hoi - Life's a beach!

Took the opportunity while there wasn't a storm looming to head to the beach for a bit of a research session on Laos as I head there in a couple of days. Good session so rewarded myself with a great snooze:) Woken up by some numpty shouting at me from the road "motabike". I mean how daft can this bloke have been, did it look like I was needing a lift anywhere, prostrate as I was on the sand. Maybe a help up but that would have been about it:)) Grrrrr.... Felt a storm coming so headed for the one of two internet joints I have found. The...

Oct 4, 2008 - Dong Hoi

Bus journey from Ninh Binh was a bit of a mare considering I did not have a complete seatbelt and was on the top level with only a small side restraint which was much required considering that we had a driver intent on beating some record or other. I managed to tie the strap that I did have to the side restraint so managed to relax enough to sleep. Still, when we stopped I managed to find another place on the bus with seat belt this time. Just out of interest, I asked the Vietnamese lady beside me where we were. Turned out we were at Dong...

Jul 15, 2006 - Hue and Dong Hoi - North Central Vietnam

Hue (pronounced hway, not hyuwi as i first thought) Was one of our favourite places so far. We stayed for three nights in a friendly little guest house. During our stay there we visited the tomb of Tu Duc, well the tomb of his hundreds of concubines, favourite wife and son. No one knows where Tu Ducs tomb is as everyone who built it was killed then the people who killed the people who built it were killed, and then the people who killed... well you get the picture. The Grounds were beautiful, set round a lily and lotus flower lake in the...

Jan 15, 2006 - To Dong Hoi

15 January - To Dong Hoi Checked out of the hotel and went to the bus station next door expecting to get straight on to a bus to Dong Hoi, as I got the impression buses there were pretty frequent. I was told there wasn't a bus today, but tomorrow. I asked where I could go, then after a while I was told I could get the bus at 2pm to Danang (some distance further south than where I wanted to go) but get off at Dong Hoi! Went back to the hotel to leave my bag until then. When I got to the bus station early, I spoke to the driver of my minibus...

Mar 6, 2005 - I'm loving this!

We are having so much fun here, and at the same time experiencing some pretty intense moments and sights. We've been riding to some sightseeing places, and our guides are great! The local guide is so knowledgeable and so proud of his country, it's great to learn so much history from him. We're getting pretty close to each other and to our guides, and it will be sad to say goodbye at the end of the ride. The weather is a little better, a little warmer, and it should keep on getting warmer as we travel...

Lenah/Vietnam 2005

Mar 5, 2005 - Rain!

We started the day with a visit to a local market, what an interesting site! We had another great day of riding, but had to finish it in the rain, it was soooo cold! We're staying tonight at a beach front resort, but it's so stormy out there and were all so tired, we're all crashing early. We're getting deeper into the remote areas, and it feels like time travel! Every time we stop after a van transfer and get all the bikes out and ready to ride, we attract a crowd of kids and adults alike. These people have such a hard but simple life!...

Aug 19, 2004 - Hue, Vietnam.

Hey Yall... Hue is exactly how I have always envisioned Vietnam!! I really liked Hue immediately as soon as we landed at the airport. The airport was really CUTE...and I mean...C U T E cause we had to disembark outside using the stairs with buses waiting to transport us to the main building. We got on the bus and it went in a semi-circle and stopped to drop us off. I had to laugh cause we certainly could walk over easily and probably would get there faster than the bus would! Guess its one of their regulations to keep us safe from other...
