Mar 11, 2007 - Hello Paradise

We left Vietnam in chaos. We got to the airport in plenty of time but twice, while lining up to check in, our ticket agent closed and we were bumped to another line up. Then, when we got through we had to wait to go through customs. There were a couple of hundred people waiting to go through customs and after people waited in line for probably up to half an hour, they would suddenly close a counter down because it was lunch time. Literally, this was the reason. People started getting angry and customs officers were saying, yes, but it is...

Jul 27, 2006 - Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a popular attraction among both Vietnamese and foreign tourists. The picturesque bay has more than 3,000 limestone karsts covered with vegetation and dotted with numerous caves of all shapes and sizes. You really can't go to Northern Vietnam without visiting Halong Bay! We booked a two day boat trip and slept overnight on the boat along with ten others. It gave us an opportunity to compare notes with other travellers on the various ways to get ripped off in Hanoi if you're not careful....

Jun 12, 2006 - Ha Long Bay

Alrighty folks, How's everyone doing? I am great, recovering from our 3-day tour of HaLong Bay, the famous islands off the NorthEast coast of VietNam. We booked the tour through our hotel, so we didn't have to worry about organizing everything. We just bought the ticket and were wisked away to the Bay to board our boat. The style of boat are famous in the bay, they're called "Junk Boats," a funny name for boats that are so beautiful. Anyhow, the dock was just as crazy as the city traffic here in SE Asia. They cram an insane amount of boats...

Jun 8, 2006 - Vietnam....Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island

Thus far my experience in Northern Vietnam has been positive. friendly and welcoming by the local people. I have not experienced one negative comment or animosity. They have a great capacity to make you welcomed and to provide the greatest curtesy possible. Maybe this won't always last as tourism triples but right now is a great time to come and vist this country. You can arrive in Hanoi and in the city near the lake there are abundant trvel shops and agents who can put together for you a week long or 5 week long adventure in the North for...

Mar 28, 2005 - Cat Ba Island

After a good night's sleep on the boat, we had breakfast and arrived at Cat Ba island. We checked into a hotel and then went on a three hour trek up a mountain in the national park. It was pretty hard walking, with a steep and rocky climb but the view at the end made it worth it as we got magnificent views of the surrounding area with eagles flying around us. Our companions today were from Spain, Italy, NZ and Oz. In the evening we wnt for a walk around town. They are preparing for a big festival (was told they spent 1 million dollars on...

Mar 4, 2005 - Ha Long Bay

7:30 am pickup for a tour of Ha Long Bay. WE got picked up at 8:30 by a guy on a bike who asked us to follow him to the bus. We then joined about 20 people for a 3 hour bus ride to the Bay. Stopped along the way along with 20 other tourbuses who were heading to the same place. And here we were thinking we were going to get a private tour... Oh well. Finallly arrived into organized chaos (seeming to be a trend on this trip). We were herded like sheep onto one of 20 tour boats, which were crammed into the dock like mismatched puzzle pieces....

Feb 24, 2005 - Bay of Descending Dragons

We decided to take a chance on the weather and head to the coast from Hanoi to an area called Halong Bay. We got out of the city for a 2 day/1 night excursion on a boat in the South China Sea. The name Ha Long Bay is literally translated as "Bay of Descending Dragons." Despite what geologists may claim, the bay was actually created when an immense dragon plunged to Earth here to help the Vietnamese in an epic struggle against foreign aggresors. Its mighty tail carved the great stone seabed violently before the creature flew away to the...
