Mar 8, 2017 - Evergreen Island

Evergreen Island March 8 2017 Tan Chau, Vietnam Today’s cocktail: “The Gimlet Special”. I knew you’d want to know. I think I’ll skip it (I don’t know what a ‘gimlet’ is and don’t really care if I ever know). Instead, I think I’ll go directly to “Kingdom Beer”, a Cambodian beer that contains 6%..... rice! (Bet you thought I was going to say alcohol, didn’t you?). Life on the boat has reached a fine balance. The captain let me know that this afternoon we’ll be stopped in the middle of the Mekong River for a few hours while the formalities...

Mar 7, 2017 - Love me tender

Love me Tender March 7, 2017 Tan Chau, Vietnam  Today's cocktail is called "Coconut Candy".  It will be available during Happy Hour prior to dinner. Every day is a different ‘cocktail of the day’. This is information that is provided in "The Daily Cruiser", a 4-page newsletter dropped off in your room each night when the bed is turned down and a different local candy treat is left on your pillow.  Tonight’s local candy is called Minh Ngoc (Green Bean Cake). Tastes like halvah made out of green beans. And maybe chickens, too. In addition,...

In our lives, we’ve spent a grand total of 3 days sleeping on a boat. 1 night in Milford Sound, NZ in 2009. 2 nights last month in Halong Bay. And now, we will spend the next 8 nights on a boat called Amadara as we head up the Mekong River between My Tho,...

Feb 11, 2016 - Cai Be, Vietnam

THIS WAS THE BEST FUN DAY OF OUR HOLIDAY SO FAR! This hotel in Can Tho is a little gem of a place, basic but lovely. We received a pot of tea on to our little balcony as soon as they spotted we were up & about. The teapot came in a hollowed out coconut to keep it hot, so quaint. Later a simple breakfast of fried eggs & bread rolls plus some fruit was great & we shared the open air dining area with their puppy, a couple of cats & even a duck. We did have a cup of coffee in our room when we first got up but the challenge was connecting the...
