Dec 29, 2014 - The coconut capital

Coconut Capital We ate dinner last night at a garden restaurant very close to the hotel. The seafood spring rolls were amazing. We had a whole red snapper in sweet and sour sauce which Jonno said was like eating cloud. The salt and pepper squid was really tender and not battered, which made the flavours extra good. We all enjoyed our dinner. We were ready for our boat trip at 8am and headed off down the Ben Tre river. The first stop was a brick factory where we saw the incredible labour that goes into making bricks by hand. They run a brick...

Dec 28, 2014 - The Travels Begin

The travels begin We set off to Eastwood station yesterday morning (as track work from Epping), allowing plenty of time and putting our pack carrying skills to the test. We all managed it easily, with Jonno streaking ahead, thus ensuring we could carry our packs anywhere if required. We thought that arriving two and a half hours ahead of our flight departure time would leave us plenty of time to check in as Vietnam airlines doesn't allow online check in. However, the queue was massive and we were at the very end of it. By the...

Oct 22, 2014 - Meekong Delta to Ho Chi Minh City

This morning I woke around 5am with the noises from the river, animals, and staff in the kitchen. Got up and had a (cold) shower at 5.45 as it was too hot to carry on lying under the mosquito net. Others were soon up after me and one of the group went out cycling with me for half an hour to explore the area while breakfast was prepared. We then visited by boat a coconut processing family operation, and a sweet making family. Around lunchtime our small coach collected us and we drove to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and checked into our luxury...

Oct 21, 2014 - Mekong Delta homestay

Early start today, to depart the hotel at 6am and catch the 8am flight to Saigon, after which we drove around 3 hours to get to the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. We left our main suitcases on the bus, and took overnight bags on to a boat which then took us to the homestay where we had lunch and checked in and got allocated a bed. The men and women got separate rooms, which had mattresses and mosquito nets. The rooms were open to the outside with big ventilation grids. In the afternoon we took a ride in small canoe type boats and a walk...

Vietnam 2014

Mar 30, 2010 - Ben Tre

Yesterday we left Saigon (not before a delicious meal of Banh Xeo - yellow pancakes with shrimp and pork and vegetable - bigger than my head). The 1 hour trip South took about 2.5, but that's OK - I enjoyed speaking with Quyen on the way over. We talked about how different things are between here and the states. The bridge into Ben Tre reminded me of the Sunshine Skyway bridge which is only a year old. Before it was built, the only way into town was by ferry, about 45 minutes. We pulled up to Kim's house, my mom's best friend from 40...
