Jun 23, 2009 - Caracas

After clearing customs at midnight the first notable event was being approached by an airport security official to change money on the black market. He offered 5 Bolivars Fuerte (Bs F.) for each cash USD. It was to be our introduction to the bizarre system of exchange controls which acts to discourage tourism by foreigners in Venezuela and any expenditures abroad by Venezuelan nationals. While Faye and I had recognized the common exchange of funds by 'trusted individuals' to secure Venezuelan currency in excess of the official rate of 2.15...

Jan 26, 2008 - Caracas Day 1

Before we saw Raisa holding the Global Exchange sign outside the gate.... and oh what a welcome sight, we had a long and uneventful day of travel. Our third seat partner, Ernesto, a buisnessman.... owner of a poutry buisness that employs 4000 workers, gave us our first political education for new North American Travelers. If only Chavez didn't want to be fidel, if only Chavez could accomplish something, if only chavez could stop giving away oil, if only he really took care of the poor, if only he didn't occupy land, if only if only if...

Jan 9, 2008 - Visiting Alan & Lorraine in Caracas

We made the 6½ hour journey to Caracas in a startlingly quick 15 hours (we love Venezuelan transport!!), and luckily Lorraine came to get us from the scary bus station (thank you!). We enjoyed Caracas much more than we thought we would, thanks to Alan's kind hospitality and our tour guides (Lorraine and Alan!). We ate the best meals we've had since we've been away (incredible fondue up the mountain, and, of course, Alan's chilli con carne!), swam in the pool, got caught up in the crowd at one of Chavez's speeches, visited the Bolvar museum...

Nov 16, 2007 - Caracas

Arrived late at night in Caracas and thankfully checked into our hotel without issue. We were slightly worried because you cannot make a hotel reservation in Caracas without making a full bank deposit beforehand, and since we could not accomplish this, we gave two nights charge to the hostel owner in Merida who was to make the bank deposit for us. Lucky for us she is a nice and honest person. The Hotel Altimira is pretty bad in the grand scheme of things, but seems like a luxury 5 star hotel compared to our past two nights. And it is better...

Caracas, Venezuela September 21st - 23rd We arrived in late on September 21st to Caracas, which is the capital of Venezuela. Robert has a friend that he was in the Air Force with many years ago (Andy Bowen). Andy met us at the airport and was gracious enough to let us stay with him. Originally from Texas he has lived in many places, but at the current time works for the American Embassy in Caracas. We were lucky enough to get an inside tour of the Embassy. No pictures are a loud to be taken inside the building, due to security reasons, but...

Jul 21, 2007 - Caracas, Venezuela

Hi All, Today is a special day. I made it to South America. I was beginning to think I was not going to get here. Oh well, better late than never b ut I did enjoy the diversions in my travel. What a journey: I was lazy the last few week and did not book my accomodation in Caracas a week before - this is due to it being a weekend and the locals tend to book into hotels. Anyway, Friday I spend on the phone and with travel agents trying to arrange accomodation. Nothing and Caracas is a big city with loads of hotels. Anyway, I decided to look...

Apr 26, 2007 - Caracas

Touchdown in Caracas airport and I enter the mayhem that is one of the most violent and corrupt cities in South America. I'm hounded by taxi drivers, but they don't realise that this tourist could barely cover the fare into Caracas, around an hour away. I opt for the airport bus, 10,000Bs and luckily get the last available seat on this run. Had I missed this one I would have arrived in Caracas after dark, and probably wouldn't have got the same advice that I was about to get. Towards the end of the bus ride, I moved to the front of the bus...
