Dec 9, 2015 - Mystery Island, Vanuatu
Pete had a nice visit at Mystery Island, where the weather is beautiful now. The old Music Director, David, signed off the ship at the last stop in Sydney and Pete is the Music Director now, until the end of his contract in February. Because he is quite a bit busier he doesn't always get off the ship at the beach-type ports and today was one of those days when he worked on the ship, rather than visiting the port.Jump to full entry
Nov 23, 2015 - Mystery Island, Vanuatu
We sent Pete a message through What'sApp to tell him that Andy's tuba had been rescued but he did not receive that message before he saw the news on Patrick's FaceBook! He was very relieved and happy that his daddy had gotten such good news. Everything is fine as he continues the island circuit this week.Jump to full entry
Nov 14, 2015 - Mystery Island, Vanuatu
Pete visited Mystery Island, an uninhabited island under the care of Vanuatu, which is another place so small that it did not appear on the map! It does boast an airstrip which was built by the US military to provide access to a nearby island, Aneityum, a few huts for overnight visitors, and some amenities for the cruise folks who stop by for a day on the beach. The pictures look beautiful, though so we are sure Pete had a nice visit there.Jump to full entry
Apr 24, 2015 - Port Vila
FOBTs, Good morning from Port Vila, Vanuatu. Today is a gloriously sunny, warm, and humid day here. Since I decided to not go ashore due to the presence of malaria here, my planned 12 laps around the promenade deck for a total of 4 miles was interrupted by the crew doing some drill. Too bad they did not consult with me before they scheduled their activity (smile). Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu, which is a small island cluster northeast of New Caledonia. The country has a long and rugged coastline, a large rain forest largely untracked...Jump to full entry
Nov 21, 2013 - So long, farewell, auf wiedersen goodbye!
Saturday, was yet another scorching day in paradise! We awoke slightly later, as we had no plans for the morning. Then in the afternoon, we headed to turtle beach early, so that we could relax, and do a little snorkelling. Sadly, the current was quite strong, so for me it was just a little swimming lesson in the shallows, and then a relax. However, the turtle monitors brought our dinner and we sat on the beach and ate. We also watched three fruit bats heading off for their nightly forages. Then we walked. We were walking for a long time,...Jump to full entry
Nov 14, 2013 - It's a hard life, but someone's got to!
After our return to the Bungalows after our ip to Vila, we decided to have a lazy afternoon of reading, and sunbathing before our barbeque. This was kindly accompanied by a local band, who played some very nice tunes, which we had a little dance to with som the kids! Then it was time for another chilled evening with some more kava and card games. Saturday we awoke early for a day of community service, helping t the lock school. However, as we were leaving, Sam (who's papa is also the chief of the village) offered to take four of us (as...Jump to full entry
Nov 7, 2013 - If at first you don't succeed!
On the way back from Vila, there was a lot of us in the boat! We were beginning to wonder if the boat was safe, but fortunately we weren't taking on too much water! Suddenly, a shout went up..."turtle!" We all looked to where the shout had come from, but sadly, we never did see anything! This was to be just a tempter for the rest of the week. When we got back, we decided to head to a beach just down from the school, but sadly the tide was in, so that we could not sit for very long! Then we went back, for a very nice barbeque. We also had a...Jump to full entry
Oct 31, 2013 - You say hello...
After an early rising, and a slightly nervy one, I checked out of my hotel. Whilst I was waiting to check out, there were two people who looked suspiciously like volunteers. I introduced myself, and lo and behold, they were! This was my first introduction to the project. This was Sam from Lichfield, and henrik from Bergen, Norway. We then headed to a bus, and there was another girl who was a bit later checking out, and she also introduced herself as also being on the project! This was Louise from Southampton! So far we were three Brits, and...Jump to full entry
Oct 28, 2013 - Just another day in paradise
So, just as suggested in the title of this entry, today was just another day in paradise! It started, as ever, with a hearty breakfast (I've been stocking up on the first free meal of the day!) and then I headed, excitingly, to the port Vila branch of ANZ bank! They've charged me twice for a withdrawal when money didn't come out the first time! Anyway, it's not yet resolved, but the matter is in progress! After that, I had decided that I was going to head to the small island resort of erakor. This required a walk of about an hour, but as...Jump to full entry
Oct 27, 2013 - Tan-na
After a shortened nights sleep, it was up for 7:30 when the bus would come to pick me up for my trip to Tanna, a smaller island to the south of Vanuatu. This would take us to mount yasur. It was also exciting, as I would be on another tour, so I was excited to find out who else was on my trip.... I was quickly left disappointed, as there were only four others, and they were all Australians!! Only kidding, I was expecting Australians, as they seem to be the only non-native nationality here! There were a couple from near Byron bay (the man...Jump to full entry
Oct 26, 2013 - Paradise lost
All too quickly, it was morning, and time to leave Sydney! After a quick breakfast of sausage roll and water, I headed to the airport on the trains again. I was very I pressed with the train system in Sydney...they have double decker trains! I don't think they could be translated to London though! I arrived at the airport early, partly to take advantage of the free wifi that had ill used me to date! I checked in, and headed to the gate early, after yet another smooth ride through the Australian customs area (despite being stopped for a...Jump to full entry
Sep 26, 2013 - Discovering Vanuatu
Vanuatu, a South Pacific nation of 83 islands, has often been listed as one of the world’s happiest places. Visiting 3 of its main islands over a 10-day trip, we discover a bit about the country and what makes it so special. Diving the Coolidge First in our list was Espiritu Santo. Our main purpose for visiting this northern island was to dive the USS President Coolidge. Originally a luxury liner which was later converted into a troop carrier during World War II, she accidentally ran into a minefield and sank as she was approaching the...Jump to full entry
