Jul 21, 2019 - Fond Du Lac, WI - old truck - new truck - great people July 10 - 15, 2019

From West Bend/Milwaukee we were supposed to go to La Crosse, WI and camp along the Mississippi River for 5 nights. About 50 miles into the trip we had a major breakdown with the truck. The clutch went out and Tom had to get us towed to Fond Du Lac, WI. In the end we decided to buy a new truck, which we had been talking about for some time but were not yet ready to bite the bullet. We have had issues with the clutch for 2 years and each time Chevrolet fixed it they told us a faulty part was the cause and they would do the work again. The...

Jul 11, 2019 - West Bend, near Milwaukee, WI July 3 - 11, 2019

Leaving Escanaba, we headed west and a little south passing through Green Bay (we saw the stadium from the truck(, Oshkosh and Fond Du Lac. We are in dairy country now – picturesque farms everywhere. Our home is near West Bend, Wi about 30 miles from Milwaukee. It is a different sort of RV park than we usually stay at. It has a lot of spaces, but they have seasonal spots that people use as “vacation homes”. They can leave their RV here all year. They can only occupy it Apr 1 – Oct 31. The park has a beach and boat access on a small lake and...

Aug 16, 2014 - Wisconsin August

Saturday, August 16, 2014 Two months since our last update. We haven’t done much, just work and doctors. Last month I had another stent put in a heart artery and surgery on my left carotid artery because it was over 90% blocked. So now I am going to cardiac rehab 3 times a week. Last week Sharon visited the orthopedic doctor to check on getting a new knee. She does need a new right knee but the timing is bad so she decided to wait until spring. A couple of weeks ago Sharon and I got a work out for a few days helping our son Craig putting on...

Then we moved up to Lake Lenwood campground in West Bend where we plan to be until October. It has been a cold spring but we finally had good weather for the Memorial Day weekend. Working part time as Good Will Ambassadors for Camping World in Saukville. We spent a couple of cool days grilling Brats...

Sep 7, 2010 - Wind, Some Rain And More Wind

Written from Lake Lenwood Beach and RV Park, West Bend, WI We did the 380+ mile drive down from the UP around the coast of Lake Michigan to just north of Milwaukee in West Bend, WI. We'll stay here and do the day trips we want to do til Saturday, when it's vacation over, have to head home! I was a beautiful drive, except we had 40-50 mph winds most of the day and a few rain showers. Poor Harvey was hopping and jumping! We drove hugging the coast line of Lake Michigan down to Green Bay and we were on 2 lane roads, so we had a tree buffer...

May 16, 2007 - Day Trip: Harrington Beach State Park, Wisconsin

Yes, we are still in West Bend, Wisconsin. The good news is that Tom's car gets fixed, the laundry gets done and we have a great day exploring the area. We go back through Port Washington and drive north on the country roads that parallel Lake Michigan. We find a place to walk on the beach near Harrington Beach State Park. There is lots of driftwood and you know John and driftwood! He sees a carving attached to every piece. We continue north to Kohler-Andre State Park for a picnic lunch and more views of the lake. Tomorrow we are definitely...

May 15, 2007 - West Bend, Wisconsin

Yes, we are still in West Bend. Tom and Barb had car trouble. We thought it was only a belt but it turned out to be more serious, something to do with the power steering. We spend the morning making arrangements to get it fixed then shop at Wal-Mart. The afternoon is rainy so John puts the awning out and carves. I load CD's onto the new IWAY. We should be on the road again by Thursday, May 17. Our campground host has threatened to move us to the seasonal section.

May 14, 2007 - West Bend, Wisconsin

For those who know where Alaska is, you may wonder why we are north of Milwaukee. For those who know how we travel, you aren't surprised. There is a very good reason for us to be here: Cabelas! After a lot of searching we find that Cabelas has the IWAY that I want, so here we are. We are off track again! After purchasing my IWAY we buy cheese at a cheese factory. We help them celebrate their one year anniversary by purchasing 50 cent ice cream cones. We drive to Port Washington to see Lake Michigan. Here is another good reason for us to be...

Jun 1, 2006 - Tales of a Volunteer Campground Host

Tales of a Volunteer Campground Host I have four days remaining in one of the fastest months of my life. This is the month I spent as a volunteer campground host for the state of Wisconsin at The Kettle Moraine State Forest- Pike Lake Unit. I can hardly believe the time is almost gone, a whole month has passed. I began this post on May 30th and July 1st seemed like it was so far away. There were so many plans for things to do during the month, like paths to explore, swimming, and just sitting back to read and write. To date I have been...

Travels With Chummy

Mar 1, 2006 - Prologue

Sitting on our balcony one Sunday afternoon August 2005, overlooking a busy downtown street, alive with the activity of people going in and out of restaurants, shops, even an art fair, basking in the ambiance of urban living, we began pondering life. Ok, that sounds pompous, but it was one of those life-changing conversations. Jo was yearning for change, a departure from the rat race, and suggested it would be nice to live in the woods in Vermont. Kind of off the wall for two city dwellers. Then Fred had his own "off the wall" suggestion:...
