Dec 9, 2011 - First Days On the Road

From Jeanne: Monday, Dec. 5 Launch day. After weeks of readying for departure, we are about as set as we can be. Boxes that could not be packed in the camper because of freezing temps are in the dining room staging area. Lists (and lists of lists) are lying mostly checked off on the counter. Wayne Nutt is busy blowing the pipes--that would be the cabin plumbing, not bagpipes. All the discussions on what should stay and what should go are over. Every inch in a 16-foot camper is prime real estate. From cowboy boots to smoked paprika, each...

Aug 20, 2011 - Here We Are

Friday started out with some fantastic views of Gitche Gumee (the Indian name for the big lake). Attached are a couple of photos if this marginal internet connection will allow. We started the morning out with a big breakfast of an egg dish (recipe from TI neighbor Sheila) and potatoes prepared by Pat. As the day passed everyone did a little of their own thing hanging out. Jeanne and Rob went off to Superior National golf course to take advantage of the twilight rates, while Pat, the kids and I stayed back and played a variety of games....

Aug 18, 2011 - Last Day In Superior

I’ll sneak in a quick blog before we leave Superior and internet access this morning. Yesterday, that is Wednesday, we took our time around the RV in the morning and then left to have our driver licenses renewed. I may change to Texas, but in case I don’t I needed to take care of the renewal while we are in Wisconsin. I always use the WDT office in Superior when possible because there usually isn’t a wait; however, this time we had a half hour wait. That wasn’t so bad and in another half hour we both were renewed for another eight years and...

Aug 17, 2011 - A Full Day & Doctor

We left the park at 10:00, an hour before I was due to register at the doctor’s office because I wasn’t sure what the construction, traffic, and parking issues would be going into Duluth. I am one of those people who can’t handle being late and will usually be early, maybe it’s a result of the training in the Corps...hurry up and wait. Well all went smoothly and I was standing at the registration desk at 10:30 and receiving the shot in my thumb by 11:00, a full half hour early. By 11:30 the therapist had instructed me on the exercises for...

Aug 15, 2011 - Family and Food

Our plan for 10:00 Mass Sunday morning was quickly scuttled with a phone call from daughter Laurie at 8:00. She had a very demanding day ahead of her with the store and their accountant so if we were to get together it had to be now. So we were soon on our way to her house with the quilt in hand. The quilt fit perfect on the bed and looked absolutely beautiful. With that mission complete we all went to the local bar and grill to meet son in-law Steve, the accountant, and some other friends of Steve and Laurie’s for a great breakfast, bought...

Aug 14, 2011 - On The Road

Saturday and we are on our way. I had done little pre-departure prep so I had it all to do in the morning. Even though I went about my business in a leisurely manner, it didn’t take long. I was in no rush because we had a fairly short trip ahead of us. A little after 10:00 we were rolling out headed north to Spooner, Wisconsin. Along the way we stopped at a roadside stand and picked up some fresh sweet corn and tomatoes. We were afraid that as in the past if we skipped this one we wouldn’t see another. Pat was afraid she wouldn’t get her...

Aug 3, 2011 - Across Minnesota into Wisconsin

We left the RV park headed to Lake Itasca State Park. We went around to the north entrance and went to the visitors center for the Mississippi River headwaters. Walked out to the edge of the lake and crossed a 20 foot log straddling the river as it came out of the lake, it is about 6-8 feet across there. The river ambles north out of the park up to Bemidji, which was our next stop to find Paul Bunyan and his blue Ox "babe". Got our pixs of Paul & Babe and toured their little visitors center and then headed for Duluth and Lake Superior....
