Sep 22, 2012 - Dinner with Nancy and her Family

Lily took us on a wild goose chase looking for Wal-Mart, never did find it. Met with Mary's sister Nancy and her boyfriend Doug her oldest boy Shaun and his son Trevor, her youngest son Levi, his wife Christine and their 2 1/2 year old Lucas for dinner at Dana's Beer Cheese Bar & Grille. Nancy is currently staying at Doug's place because her apartment building had a fire last week.

Sep 21, 2012 - V & M Happy Campers

We are parked at the V & M Happy Campers RV Park about seven miles northeast of Rice Lake. Had a nice chat with the owners of the park this morning at the bar they own on the corner, gave us some tomatoes', carrots and cucumbers from his garden. Nancy had to work today so we drove around Rice Lake a little then went over to the St Croix Indian Casino in Turtle Lake for lunch. Still cold windy today and threatening to rain, nice drive through a couple of small towns, mostly corn and dairy farms.

Sep 20, 2012 - Rune Stone Museum

We were at the door of the Kensington Rune Stone Museum (https://www.runestonemuseum.org) waiting for them to open at 9AM. Still very cold and windy this morning, made a stop at a thrift stone before getting back on the road to Rice Lake Wi. to see Mary's sister Nancy. Lily definitely took us on the scenic route rather than the quickest, three times we got caught behind farm equipment going from one field to another so what should have been a four hour drive took us almost six.

Aug 8, 2011 - Aberdeen, SD to Ladysmith, WI.

Another long day of driving across the remaining South dakota prarie into the green farmland of Minnesota. Saw signs of much flooding in the fields of SD. Stopped for the night in Ladysmith Wi. near Rice Lake. Americinn again and very nice room. There are two AmericInn's here across the street from each other. I asked the owner of the one we are staying in why this was, she told me that the previous owner of this unit sold it to them as he was in financial problems. They have the Americinn franchise, but Corporate AmericInn decided to...

Mar 21, 2010 - The End

Well…we got home!!! At approximately 6 p.m. on the 16th we landed in Minneapolis. It was 3 a.m. in Reunion, so our internal clocks were beyond haywire!!! Mom and Dad met us at the airport and drove us home to Rice Lake. We had McDonald’s along the way. I can’t believe I almost missed the Shamrock shakes!!! :) For the first several days home I woke up at 3 a.m. – the older I get, the harder it is to recover from jetlag. Today I managed to sleep until 6 a.m., so I’m hoping I’m finally back on track. I’ve started applying for jobs in the...

Jun 25, 2008 - Day 17: Elgin, IL to Rice Lake, WI

Back to the I-90 tollway again, at least until we got out of Illinois and into Wisconsin. The service plazas in Illinois are built over the roadways - different. Found a pleasant surprise when we stopped for coffee at Edgerton, Wisconsin. (And spared a thought for Uncle Hop, who hails from Edgerton, Ohio.) The “Wisconsin Wine and Cheese Chalet” is a treasure-trove of goodies, with many kinds of cheese, wine and other calorie-laden snacks. Guiltily, we limited ourselves to coffee only, and when we asked if there was a place to sit, were...

Jul 30, 2006 - Chetek, Wisconsin

Saturday, July 30, we hung around the RV. It is a hot day and I got the web site caught up and get some reading done. Sunday we drove the Jeep to Osceola Wisconsin, where the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway is located. The train ride was a 90-minute ride along the St. Croix River and back again. We will just about go anywhere to ride a train. We then tried to maneuver around town to see the water falls that the town is built around. The whole downtown district was torn up to do some repaving and rebuild the bridge that connects the north...

Jun 26, 2006 - Rice Lake, WI

We stayed 3 days at the Rice Lake KOA, in Rice Lake, WI. We were only going to stay 2 days, but the park was so pretty - we saw the lake out our back window, that we decided to stay another day. If the weather cooperates, we might go canoeing tomorrow. We found a meat market that only sells Bison, Elk and Ostrich. We stocked up on our meat supply and will have elk steaks tonight for dinner. Dan broke down and bought one of those tri-pod grill stands that you put over a campfire ring. We'll see how that works tonight. On Thursday, we head...

Oct 12, 2005 - Canoe Bay, Wisconsin

Canoe Bay is an inn that I have wanted to visit for many years. Unfortunately, it's in the middle of nowhere (Chetek, Wisconsin), at least by Miami standards. The decision to make a detour to the inn was prompted by several factors - I was only a few hours away (although those few hours did happen to be in the opposite direction)!), I needed to take a break from driving, and I just needed to sit back and relax for a day or so. Canoe Bay is the only Relais and Chateaux in the Midwest and is a hideaway known for its seclusion and peaceful...
