Jul 1, 2018 - Portage, Wisconsin

1-Jul-18 Portage, Wisconsin What a miserable day! Last night the temperature never got below 80 degrees. I had to run the A/C all night. I-90 from Ohio to Wisconsin is a toll road. We left Elkhart, In at 9:45 am an entered the toll road at exit 92. We continued on the Indiana then transitioned onto the Illinois toll road for the duration of toll roads; a total distance of 200 miles. The cost was $77.40 for an average cost per mile of 38 cents per mile. We got to experience why Chicago is called the windy city. It was windy with gusts such...

Oct 6, 2013 - Wisconsin, Portage, near Wisconsin Dells

On 10/6 We move from Lone Rock to Sky High Campground in Portage WI, near The Dells. The campground is on a hill above a ski area. You can see for miles. We do some school work, some shoping and a quick trip down the the Dells area. 10/7 We walk around The Dells area, go to the visitor center and then take a boat ride into The Dells. It was a great ride and very educational. I never knew. 10/8 We do the Kalahari indoor theme park. The Dells are the water capital of the world, but it is a little late in the year for that. This seemed to be...

Oct 22, 2012 - Baraboo

It was cloudy today with rain expected. We decided to drive to the town of Baraboo which is not far from Portage. It was in Baraboo that five of the Ringling Brothers, who lived there, started their circus. The circus wintered in Baraboo and the Museum occupies the buildings where the circus acts practiced during the winter. It soon grew and became a train circus, traveling all over the country and eventually bought out Barnum and Bailey's Circus. After that, the circus would winter in Connecticut where the Barnum and Bailey's Circus had...

Oct 21, 2012 - Wisconsin Dells

It was another bright sunny day with highs expected in the mid sixties. We headed north the the Wisconsin Dells. The Wisconsin Upper Dells is a five mile stretch of the Wisconsin River. The area is largely made up of Potsdam Group of Cambrian Sandstone which has been eroded by water and wind. Dells comes from the French word dalles meaning a stretch of river between high rock walls. The Potsdam Sandstone is found only a few places in the world, in Potsdam, Switzerland, Potsdam,NY and here in the Dells which is the largest formation. Our...

Oct 20, 2012 - Cheese Country

Our first stop today was Madison which is the State Capital of Wisconsin. On Saturday mornings they from April through November, they have a huge farmers' market which takes place on the sidewalk surrounding the Capitol Building. It is very regulated to include only Wisconsin produced products. There are fruits and vegetables, plant and flowers, cheeses, meats and baked goods as well as jars of jams, jellies, pickles, pickled beets and more. It took us almost an hour to get all the way around and we left with cheese, fruit, vegetables and...

May 27, 2011 - Back in Minnesota

Wow, never thought it would be so long to get back to you but when you are with your kids, nothing else matters. Our travels thru Illinois was the best we have ever had.. The construction on I-39 was finally completed and we were more then happy to pay the tolls to get into Wisconsin.. It was reasonable even though we were towing our house and was fast and smooth… Love it!… Once we got to Wisconsin the scenery changed to the cheese motif. If you wonder why, all you have to do is look around you to see some of the most beautiful farm country...

Bill and Helen/ 2011

May 6, 2010 - Portage,WI

We landed just north of Madison, in a campground without WIFI, except at the office, which is always closed. So, I am typing this with freezing fingers on a bench outside the office. More storms due in tonight. Bill is up on the roof of the rig, lubricating the slides. We're leaving tomorrow morning for a town near Kohler (we're going to the factory tour Monday).

Sep 3, 2009 - Catching up

We had such a wonderful time when we were in Sioux Falls and when we continued on into Minnesota we followed the corn fields to the county park where Bill’s sister Elaine and her husband Arlis live… We had a delightful time with them just gabbing and eating the great dinner Elaine had fixed for us…. Early the next morning we all left to go to Willmar for an appointment with the staff at the nursing home where Bill’s mom lives.. We got there just in time to take Mom out to lunch before the meeting and then come back to good reports on her...

Aug 8, 2008 - Day 118 Portage WI Pat & Vera’s pg 115 M10

Day 118 Friday 8th August Portage WI Pat & Vera’s We got up this morning, ate breakfast and cleaned the van a little and headed down the road to Portage, only stopping off for the essentials – ‘viddles’ of course, yep morning tea and lunch. Once again the countryside was very green and lush, mostly the crops were corn. There has been a small dark green crop that we haven’t been able to identify. It only grows to a height of approx 18”with pointy dark foliage, even after close inspection Steve couldn’t tell what it was. Well it got the...

Aug 23, 2006 - Travel Day

Today was a travel day from Michigan to Wisconsin. We stopped in Tinley Park, Wisconsin, the City of Statues. They had six statues of pioneer and Indian people scattered all over the city. We found one of them. Tonight we stayed in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, at the State Park. That night there were tornado warnings in the neighboring county and we had strong winds, lightning, and rain.

Aug 31, 2005 - Portage, Wisconsin

Time with our children and grandchildren in the Twin Cities went all to fast. My oldest daughter Coleen was going to start working for the School Board in Special Ed. so for the first time in I don't know how many years, we went school shopping. Fun. It was quite a challange when we invited them all over to our house for dinner. First off we were running low on water so I took all the fruits and vegetables to an outside water faucet to clean them. Reminded me of our pop-up days. Next, I went to put the potato casserole in the oven and we...
