Aug 21, 2018 - Randle WA – Shady Firs RV Park and Campground

Next stop was the area around Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helen’s. Our first day we drove up to Mount Rainier National Park. Even though we lived in Vancouver WA for a while during the 80’s, we never visited Mount Rainier, so we thought this would be a good time to do so. Normally, that would have been a good idea, but this is not a normal time in Washington state. All the forest and wild fires have put a damper on tourism either because you can’t see anything or because you can’t breathe. In this case, you just plain couldn’t see Mount...

Retired at Last!

Jul 29, 2018 - Cascade Peaks RV Park in Randall, WA

July 26 - July 29 We are suppose to be at Ike Kinswa State Park in Silver Creek, WA. But again we couldn't get our rig into the advertised 70 foot site!!! Yes, the site was 70 feet long but the road was a very narrow one lane road with big tree. So luckily we didn't hit anything going through the park to our site. Anyway after only a short amount of time we just gave up, it wasn't going to work. So the ranger refunded all but one night of our stay. We suggested that the Washington State Park web site should state that this park is not...

Millers RV Travels

Oct 4, 2016 - Randle, Washington

The last few weeks have been pretty quiet around our “home-on-wheels.” We have kept occupied doing the usual things that most of you probably do on a daily basis. We try to walk a couple of miles each day in order to keep these old bodies functioning well. While in Olympia, one of our favorite walks is around Capitol Lake; it is pleasant and affords lakeside views and views of the State Capitol on the hill above. While we await the time for Jon’s doctor appointments to arrive, we have moved around a bit. For the past two weeks we have been...

Jul 20, 2016 - Sun and Clouds on the Mountaintops

We continued west to Randle, WA where we stayed to visit Mount Rainier National Park. We ran into the same problem we seem to meet whenever we want to experience high peaks; the weather was not the best. It was fine at the lower levels, but the Pacific Northwest does not do justice to its magnificent mountaintops. The clouds covered the peaks, and in this case most of the mountain besides. We went to the visitor center and watched the film as is our norm, but wished we had worn our parkas and brought the golf umbrellas. The next morning we...

Apr 13, 2016 - Cascade Peaks

Leaving South bend we drove across Highway 12. This skirts the southern part of Mt Raineer, but it was too cloudy to see the mountain. We found a nice campground outside the town of Randle on the Cowlitz River. It is huge. But apparently they had a series of bad floods in the last few months and they had sustained a lot of damage. We did not park along the river since the sites were a little muddy and we did not want to get stuck. We did find a nice dry spot though. It was a great place to walk. We did quite a bit of walking around the...

Aug 28, 2013 - Gifford Pinchot Forest

We left Rainier and headed south through Packwood. Packwood is home to the largest flea market in the northwest and everybody was already showing up for the Labor Day gala. Needless to say, we got our gas and kept going to the Gifford Pinchot forest to camp. We stopped At IronCreek ccampground just to get some water and found it to be so pretty that we stayed. It had old growth trees all in it and we found some hen of the woods mushrooms. These are some tasty mushrooms sauté with butter and garlic powder! We walked the 2 mile loop trail...

Jul 31, 2013 - In the Shadow of Mt Rainier

Maple Grove RV Park, Randle, WA Wednesday, July 31, 2013 12:30 pm Greetings from the area south of Mount Rainier National Park. This tranquil and scenic area is 200 miles from necessary shopping (such as PetsMart) and 57 miles from the nearest real supermarket, but has lovely weather in summer. It’s been mostly sunny with high temps in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s. And I’ve been sitting here with Rascal enjoying it. We left Birch Bay on July 7th for Mount Vernon RV Park in Mount Vernon WA. This was a maintenance stop – I had my annual RV...

2013 Summer Tour

Jun 19, 2013 - Into the Cascade Mountains

After our usual morning ritual of coffee and discussion about how to attack the day, we get things organized for travel. As we were leaving the Yakima area, there were many fruit stands along the way, so we stopped to get yet another bag of delicious cherries. We have enjoyed 3 different varieties, Bings, Rainiers and Strawberry Rainiers; they all have been fresh and quite tasty. Since our route of travel was taking us up to higher elevations, we had lowered the pressure in the sleep number bed. Good thing we did as White Pass is over 4,000...

Dream On

May 6, 2013 - Change of plans for arriving in Randle

We left Richardson Point, Eugene, OR this morning and planned to stay a night in Chehalis, WA to do some last minute laundry and shopping. It turned out to be better for our boss if we went straight in, instead of Tuesday, since there were priority items to be taken care of. We are now parked in North Fork Campground. It's a 33 site campground without any water or elect at the sites for the campers. There are several water spouts around for the campers to get water, and outhouses. Everything is very green, lots and lots of very tall trees,...

Aug 24, 2012 - Randle, Washington

Randle is a little town located southwest of Mt. Rainier along US Highway 12 coming down from White Pass. One of our membership campgrounds is located there right along the Cowlitz River. It has been many years since we spent time in Mt. Rainier National Park and its immediate surrounding areas, so this was our opportunity to refresh our memories and catch up on the changes. Our first goal was Paradise on the south side of Mt. Rainier. There are several choices of roads to take over and around the intervening hills between Randle and Mt....

Aug 9, 2012 - Shady Firs RV-Randle WA

Thursday-8/9- Shady Firs RV-Randle WA Friday we drove up to and through Mount Rainier National Park. This was about a 6 hour drive through the forest and up the mountain to 5400 foot elevation--Mount Rainer’s peak is at a 14,136 foot elevation. As we drove up the mountain we got different views of the snow-topped mountain and the glaciers on Mt. Rainier, each view being more beautiful as we drove up the mountain. The literature said that about 10,000 people try to climb to the top each year, but only about half of them make it to the top....

Aug 5, 2011 - Randle, Washington

Today we moved from north of Seattle to Randle, Washington, southeast of Seattle. Driving through Seattle on a Friday afternoon is not a nice thing. We skirted the main part of the city to the east, but it was still incredibly congested. We arrived here at the campground around 4. It's in a quiet area outside of Randle, which isn't much of a town. But it is located between Mt. Rainier NP and Mt. St. Helens. We intend to visit both while we are here. Not much happening today so I'll update this when we have something to report.
