On our last day in the North Cascades National Park, we hiked the Thunder Knob Trail, a 3.6-mile round trip above an arm of Diablo Lake. The sky was pretty cloudy that day, so views of the mountains were limited but still impressive. When we finished there, we drove east on WA-20 to Diablo Lake Overlook for more beautiful views of the lake with a cold wind blowing. Further east we found a pretty good view of Ross Dam and its powerhouse; this third dam in Seattle City Light’s Skagit River Hydroelectric Project is very remote. Along Highway...

Aug 17, 2010 - Gold Bar - Pearrygin Lake SP via Leavenworth and Chelan

Our first stop today is Leavenworth. I'm afraid, Leavenworth's charms are lost on me. I have lived in Germany and the Swiss alps, and know what 'authentic' looks like. The inhabitants of Leavenworth have clearly worked very hard to get their 'Bavarian town' right, but oh, it is wrong on so many fronts! I am not a huge fan of theme parks/faux architecture anyway.
