Mar 31, 2014 - A quick dash home

We got up early this morning to leave Port Townsend and catch an earlier ferry. We got home about 1 PM so we could prepare for a potluck at our church small group tonight. Tomorrow is laundry day, repack and do a few chores at home before hitting the road again!

Feb 11, 2014 - Safe back home

Our drive over the pass today was fine. The weather was great until we got to Central Washington. The Valley was overcast and we had 5 " of new snow on our driveway when we got home. We have a few days before we head out again, so get the laundry done, pet the cat, do some business on the phone and computer....

Feb 2, 2014 - Mid-Winter Conference, Day 4

The 4 Chaplains Service was very nice this morning. After breakfast, we packed up and headed home. The drive was fine and the cat was glad to see us when we got home. And, we got home with plenty of time to settle-in and watch the game. Good day, but we are tired!

Dec 21, 2013 - Home for the holidays

We are back home. There is nothing on the schedule now through the holidays, so it looks like I am pretty free until after the first of the year. That's "free" in the sense I won't be on the road. however, most days see me on the computer or phone quite a bit, so I guess I should count that as well! Anyway, looking forward to seeing the kids and granddaughter at Christmas!

Dec 14, 2013 - Wreaths Across America

Today, our Post helped with the Third Annual Wreaths Across America event held at the Grandview Cemetery. I did not have an "official" role as Department Commander, though I was introduced and spoke for less than two minutes. The event is timed to coincide with ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and occurs at cemeteries all across the nation. Ours is the largest in Central Washington. This has become a neat community event. It is organized by a local Gold Star Mother and our Post handles all the ceremonial part for her. The first...

Nov 26, 2013 - Getting the car fixed

As I had previously noted, we discovered the car was in need of new front brakes, so today was the day to get that done before I did a whole lot more of travel. It was also time to get an oil change, so that was done too. I am the 6th Commander to drive this car. It has 170,000+ miles on it. I suspect it wall have close to 200,000 on it by the time my term ends.

Nov 24, 2013 - Back home!

I got up early this morning, cleaned up my son's apartment, loaded up, grabbed a breakfast to go, picked up my friend from church and hit the road. The trip home was fine, thankfully. It's good to be home after the long week. I'll likely have a couple more weeks like this during my term... something to look forward to!

Nov 14, 2013 - Duties at Home

I have spent a few days recovering from travel. Today, I had another visit with a client I am helping with a VA claim. This work is gratifying, but it can be painfully slow, as this case has been. We are making progress. Next week, I will be gone most of the week on the West side of the state. Nancy will stay home to maintain the house and prepare for Thanksgiving.

Nov 7, 2013 - Back Home for Service Officer Work

Today is a catch-up day in a manner of speaking. I had an appointment with a client about some VA-related items I am helping him with. I then spent time on the phone and computer with headquarters issues. We have a family wedding on the 9th, then will head West again for another Veterans Day event.

Nov 6, 2013 - More Veterans Day Stuff

I met with the high school principal today about Legion programs for youth and was well received. He commented on my speech yesterday. He said he did not hear it, but heard about it from multiple people. He said his lead counselor had come into his office crying and said, "You missed a great speech." This afternoon, I was the guest speaker at McClure Elementary School -- what we sometimes call our "Inner City" school (meaning mostly low income kids attend here). They do a great job at this school. My speech was similar to the one given at...

Nov 5, 2013 - Veterans Day Assembly

I received a last minute call yesterday asking if I could speak at the Veterans Day Assembly at Grandview High School. The Legion hasn't been asked to participate at the High School for years, but apparently their "usual" guests with the VFW were no longer available. The event went very well. The kids did a great job with their portions. I was the only guest speaker. I pretty much spoke off the top of my head. I talked about heroes and the difference between action heroes and sports heroes and real heroes, such as veterans, especially those...
