Dec 16, 2018 - Tyler State Park (12/7 - 12/8/18)

It rained all the way to our next stop, Tyler State Park. This is very nice park that was built by the CCC in 1935-1940. The sites are mostly pull-thru, but they are small for todays larger RVs. We were in Site #49 with our door side to the woods. It was a very nice site. The park was dressed for the holidays. Many of the RVs in the park had Christmas lights and other decorations displayed. It was quite festive! We were there 2 nights and it rained the whole time we were there so we didn't get to enjoy all the great trails and other...

May 16, 2018 - Tyler, TX

After packing our last minute items and a few tweaks to attaching the new car to the RV for towing, we were off on our summer RV trip by around 10am. We decided not to north on I-35 due to all the excessive construction. Instead, we took U.S. Hwy 79 until just outside Tyler, TX, our first stop. People always ask where we end up our first night. It’s almost always in Texas. This is one BIG state! Although avoiding the interstate took a little longer, it was a no stress drive through beautiful ranch land. We stopped in Hearne for a quick...

Sep 27, 2017 - A Visit With Shea

Today we traveled about 5 hours to Tyler, TX on our way back home to Houston. We picked Tyler because Shea is going to college there at UT on a softball scholarship. Shea had a full day of classes, pt for her torn ACL, and softball practice starting around 4:00ish and lasting til 9:00. Wow!! After getting settled in at rv park, we agreed to meet at Chilis halfway from where we both were. It had only been a few weeks since she left for college, so why did she look so much more mature?? She looked like a doll strolling in sporting a shorter...

Jun 23, 2017 - Tyler, TX...then back home :(

As most of you may be aware, our trip was cut VERY short this year. We got to our first stop and Jay was in so much pain with his hips that we had to head home. So I got to drive the RV home while Jay was in bed. Luckily, we had planned for the possibility many years ago, so I learned to drive the RV when we first got it. All went well with the drive except the stress of driving through construction on I-35 in Waco. But we got home safely, moved Jay's hip replacement surgery up as soon as we could and are settling back at home. But we'll be...

Nov 4, 2015 - Onto Tyler Texas

Our plan for the day was to move the 5er to Vicksburg, Miss. and tour the Vicksburg National Battlefield, the site of a major Civil War Battle fought to control access to the Mississippi River. After we were hooked up and John had punched the coordinates into the GPS for our destination and it indicated we were only going to travel 31 miles, Connie asked “Would you really be disappointed if you didn’t see Vicksburg” and John replied “not really, we’ve already seen lots of cannons.” So instead of moving the rig 31 miles, we drove through...

Our route today was to take us northeast to Waco and then to Tyler, TX. I had planned the route with at least three rest stops, including a picnic lunch break. Jun 20, 2013 - Visiting Friends

Thursday, June 20, 2013 For the last few days, we have been visiting in Tyler, Texas with friends we knew when we all lived in Michigan. We have had a lovely, restful visit and while we were with them they took us to the Tyler Civic Theatre to see a program called “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” presented by four extremely energetic performers. These gals sang songs and added comedy to a fun-filled evening of music and laughs. Early this morning we are getting packed up and ready to head on west to Abilene, Texas.

North To Alaska 2013

Apr 14, 2013 - shore am thirsty!!!!

If you remember, Wayne has found Nirvana on this trip twice – once at the chili cook-off in Terlingua and the other at The Shed in Ocean Springs. Today he has found...............what’s the opposite of Nirvana? For him it is Smith County in Texas. Wayne’s cousin, Rick, lives in a place called Hallsville, Texas which just happens to be pretty much right on the road we were taking when leaving Louisiana. So with unusual foresight we contacted Rick and met him for a wonderful 2 ½ hour lunch. He is one of those people that if you haven’t seen...

Mar 31, 2013 - Babies in the Spring

March 31, 2013 Part of the fun of living on a 2800 acre ranch is being here in the spring to herald in the new births. We have had calves being born since the day we arrived and have finally gotten the last one on the ground. They are Hereford babies and are they ever cute! Our neighbors, Tom and Swany, are old hands at cows and calving. Their lives have been spent raising Angus cows in Iowa. Swany says theses mamas are spoiled and very few of them know the proper way to take care of their young. They take them close to the road and let...

Feb 22, 2013 - Out of town adventure--Quitman and Tyler

Feb. 22 to Feb. 24 Out of town we go, but first I must get my hair cut. There are several things that are problematic as an RVer. One is getting my do done. After that horrendous haircut at the air force base in Albuquerque, I now only go to Aveda salons. Thanks to my daughter Katie for that advice! It did not fail me this time and I learned new places to eat at in the bargain. G and I have discovered that some of the best restaurants are in small towns. Indeed, Johnson City has a fabulous place on the square called Pecan Street Brewery...

Dec 11, 2012 - Tyler, TX

We have started our trip back to Orlando, Florida where we will spend Christmas. Our plan is to make a 200 mile journey every other day to get there. The stops along the way are going to be determined mostly by the distances and not by tourist attractions along the way. We are now in Bullard, just outside Tyler, Texas. The most interesting thing about Tyler is that it is the original home of the Tyler rose, and yes, there is a yellow version. Tyler rose root stock is hardy and is used for almost all grafted rose plants. We did not go in to...
