Sep 17, 2020 - Slaton, TX

This was our first time at this RV park. It's OK, with the only downside being that it is close to the highway so we could hear traffic going by all night. Slaton is a small town out on the northern plains of Texas, just outside Lubbock. The road is good and there are some widely separated towns. Some towns look like they are doing OK but other towns are on the verge of becoming ghost towns. Twin Pines RV Park is a no frills park but otherwise nice.

Jun 12, 2017 - Official first day

Tonight we are in Slaton, TX. We left Fredericksburg this morning about 9:30 and headed north. The weather has been great all day, clear but warm. Even though we are traveling west, we first have to go north, so the sun is not in our eyes in the afternoon. Everything went without a hitch, except for one small thing, we hit a bump in the road and the radio "fell out"! I had noticed before that the upper left corner looked loose, well after the bump, it really was loose. After we arrived in Slaton, we spent almost an hour fixing the thing. We...

Utah and Back

Mar 30, 2017 - Thursday 3/30/17

We had a quiet drive north today. We're spending tonight about 15 miles south of Lubbock. Based on the current weather reports, we are planning on heading for Lamar, CO tomorrow. We will check again in the morning before we leave. It's supposed to be very windy tomorrow, so Bill may be white-knuckling it. We also have a small chance for severe weather, but there's no dodging it. We're hoping the weather clears Saturday so we can get home. If it doesn't cooperate, we will leave Lamar on Sunday. The Lamar campground is sparse, but it has...

May 8, 2015 - Fredericksburg to Slaton, TX

We were blessed with good weather for our drive today. We started out with overcast skies but broke out into partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day - mostly beautiful blue skies with clouds around the perimeters. We expected the wildflowers to die out as we left the Hill Country but that didn't happen. The roadsides were covered with wildflowers for the entire drive. The recent rains have kept everything green even into the high plains. Speaking of recent rains... We stopped about 30 miles from Slaton to fuel up. When David got out of...

Apr 29, 2014 - On the Move

Our first day of travel was a mixed bag of weather. We started out in lovely sunshine but about halfway we hit gusty winds & blowing dust. We enjoyed the views - probably would have enjoyed better views without the dust this afternoon. We're driving thru areas we've not seen before so it was all very interesting. We just couldn't believe all the wind machines & oil well jacks we saw on the drive today. We're safely in the Twin Pine RV Park in Slaton for the night. Hopefully the winds will decrease overnight & not be so bad...

Oct 5, 2012 - Slaton, TX

We left Terrell, TX yesterday morning towards somewhere else in Texas. This is a very WIDE state. We took I20 just south of Dallas/Fort Worth. It is about 70 miles from one side of Dallas to the other side of Fort Worth. Traffic was heavy, but still nothing like I4 or I75. We arrived in Slaton, TX around 4pm. That is just outside Lubbock, TX. We will be here for a couple of days to rest and do some sightseeing. We plan to go to the Buddy Holly museum in Lubbock. Alan said it may be closed for remodel. We'll have to see what else there is to...
