Apr 8, 2018 - Rockport, TX

On April 2, 2018 we arrived at the Bay View RV Resort in Rockport, TX. The headline here is Hurricane Harvey’s devastation on August 26, 2017. This was an F-4 hurricane with 150 mile per hour winds and a 13 foot storm surge making a direct hit on Rockport. Rockport has been combined with the city of Fulton for years; generally referred to as Rockport/Fulton. We have been visiting Rockport since the late 1980s, so we obviously have good memories and warm feelings for the area. When the national news reported that Harvey totally destroyed the...

Mar 4, 2018 - Oyster Fest!

Last weekend while in Rockport we saw a sign that there was an Oyster fest here this weekend, so we came back. This time just a day trip. The Oyster Fest was fun. All the money goes to the local fire department. The money they made last year helped them build the new firehouse which housed a lot of people during the hurricane. We were told that just on Saturday, the guys shucked 30,000 oysters. This is a four day festival. That is a lot of oysters. All the oysters are donated by a local fish shop. Mike ate some of the slimy beasts, and we...

Feb 24, 2018 - Whoopin' It Up!

One of the birds that I wanted to see in Texas was a Whooping Crane. There are only about 600 of these birds left. They winter on the Texas Coast and nest up in Alberta. I had heard about a boat tour that takes people out to see them. Plus other birds so I signed us up. The boat left from Rockport Texas at 730 am so we got a hotel room for a couple of nights. Rockport is a couple hundred miles from where we are staying at Falcon Lake. The town of Rockport is just a little bit east of Corpus Christi bins nearby. on the Texas coast. This...

Feb 13, 2018 - Harvey Can't Mess with Texas

Today we left Corpus Christi for our next destination, Palacious (Pah lash ish) but along the way we made it a point to stop in Rockport to visit the town and make contact with the people our son, Brandon and his friends, assisted after Hurricane Harvey. As we told you in our last blog, Brandon and two of his law enforcement friends drove to Texas to assist those affected by the devastating hurricane last August. They used vacation/personal time and with their own monies/donations they loaded up a truck with equipment and headed to Texas...

East Bound and Down

Jan 20, 2018 - Saturday, Rockport Texas

Candy had one of her spells last night and has gotten out of bed. She has taken the medicine but it is not taking effect yet. It appears she is getting dehydrated and I need to fine an emergency room close. Well found out Rockport has nothing and the closest ER is in Aransas Pass, about 15 miles from here. At 4 pm off we went to find an ER, problem is most of them are still closed from the Hurricane, of course most everything is else is due to needing to rebuild. The closest hospital is Corpus Christi, which is were we will go. I was told...

2018 Winter

Jan 18, 2018 - Thursday, Rockport Texas

I did get out and take some pictures of the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. It is very depressing to see all the damage that happened and lives that were destroyed from the storm. Need to get away from this. Tomorrow we will drive down to Corpus Christi for the day and hopefully my lovely bride will be doing the Segway there. I was able to get our water hooked up again so now we are back on the park water. My lovely bride decided that Wal-Mart was calling so away she goes.

2018 Winter

Jan 17, 2018 - Wednesday, Rockport Texas

Of all times to run very low on propane this was not the day. The thought of unhooking and then finding somewhere to fill propane was not something I wanted to do. Alas, found a company that would come to the campground and fill the tank. They had another motorhome in this park to fill so around 5:00 pm the truck showed up and now we are full again on propane. Thank goodness we have a couple of small electric heater that kept us warm while we waited. This was the last night for very cold weather, got down to 25 degrees, it is should get up...

2018 Winter

Jan 15, 2018 - Monday, Rockport Texas

This was not a very good day for me, got some kind of bug. Spend most of the day sleeping, hopefully this will go away. I did get my flu shot this year but don’t think it is the flu. Just to much travel the last few days. They are predicting some bad weather moving in for the next couple of days so we will see how that shakes out. At least they are not talking snow but some freezing rain coming in for tomorrow night. Something about here is they have not recovered from Hurricane Harvey, lots of the places are still closed so we will be here...

2018 Winter

Jan 14, 2018 - Sunday, Rockport Texas

Just a little history of Rockport Texas. Following the Civil War, a number of people considered developing the Live Oak Peninsula. Joseph F. Smith, who had founded the nearby town of St. Mary's in 1850, joined with Thomas H. Mathis and his cousin J.M. Mathis, who were agents of the Morgan Steamship line, and founded a wharf at the site of what would later become the town of Rockport, in 1867. The same year, George W. Fulton and his wife, Texas heiress and Joseph Smith's cousin, Harriet Smith Fulton moved to her extensive land holdings on...

2018 Winter

Nov 15, 2017 - Rockport

After spending a week in Rockport, TX, our wheels are moving once again. We had a great time with our friends Wade and Mary while we stayed at Lagoons RV Resort. We played cards, golfed, shared stories, drove around looking at the hurricane damage, went to the movies and reacquainted ourselves with old friends and met new friends. We were having so much fun and keeping ourselves so busy, the week just flew by. Hurricane Harvey made landfall at Rockport, Fulton and Port Aransas as a Cat 5 hurricane and produced 40 tornadoes. A lot of the...

Nov 4, 2017 - November 4, 2017 – Aransas Pass and Rockport, Texas

November 4, 2017 – Aransas Pass and Rockport, Texas I decided to go see how bad things are in Rockport. One of my favorite places to eat (Ken and Betty’s too) is right on the Gulf in Rockport. I was prepared for it to be gone, but they are already open. There are ladders scattered around inside, but you can dine inside if you want. In addition, they have set up a tent for dining and one for a kitchen so that you can dine outside if you want to. There is a ton of debris everywhere you look in Rockport. Roofs are gone, and windows are blown...
