Oct 25, 2018 - Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Crossed another time zone. Now in Central so only an hour behind home. That and knowing I’ll be spending all but a few days of my remaining time in Texas makes it seem as if the trip is winding down. Not counting the time at Bonnie’s for Thanksgiving, I have 23 days left. I’ll be kind of disappointed to see it end. Today I stopped at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. As the kids might say, this was “Way cool”. There are 3 trails. Interestingly, 2 of them are self-guided. I’ve been in a few caverns and there was always a guide required to go...

May 31, 2018 - Day 2 - Midland / Odessa

Got rolling out of Las Cruces right on time (0930). Wanted to get through El Paso well before rush hour. We've been travelling I-20 for almost 20 years and I swear the interstate has been under construction in El Paso the entire time. No different now, almost worse. Looks like they're building a whole new highway right next to the existing one. But at 1030, traffic was tolerable so we survived. Was hoping gas prices would be lower on the Texas side, but no luck. Everything is $3.05 or higher. So we thought we'd try the Costco on the east...

Jun 5, 2016 - Chilling with the boys

Today was a quiet day. We got up, had breakfast and then headed over to my son's house. He and his family were at their church and Charlotte and I attended ours, online. The rest of the day we all just hung around the house chilling. The four boys, Gumpa son and 2 grandsons, got to playing some poker together. We had fun just hanging out. That evening we went back to the RV and got ready to leave.

Jun 4, 2016 - My Grandson graduates

For the last few days we have been sleeping in the RV, I get up and take a 2 - 3 mile walk, eat breakfast, shower and then go over to my son's where we sit around talking, running out on errands, and helping to get ready for the graduation party. The graduation does not start till 4 pm so they are having their party starting this morning at 11 to 2 at a friend's house that has a huge yard and a very nice pool. We had about 30 kids from school and about 70 family and friends, so a nice large crowd. All the kids had a great time, and my son...

Jun 1, 2016 - Let's see some grandkids

Up again somewhat early again to get traveling. Today we are going down to Midland to my son, daughter-in-law and 3 grandkids house. The drive was a good drive with no problems, air pressure is up where it should be and no problem with the tire. We arrived at my sons home at about 12:30 pm and it was great seeing them again. After an hour, we climbed back in the RV and headed down to the Truck Tire Center to see about getting a couple of new tires. I belong to an organization that has a deal with Michelin and we got a deal for only $525 per...

May 4, 2016 - Bush Childhood Home

George W. Bush Childhood Home is a historic house that was home to former U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush from 1951 to 1955. It is located at 1412 W. Ohio Ave. in Midland, Texas. The home was built in 1940 and was purchased by the Bush family in 1951 for $9,000. They lived in the 1,400-square-foot home until late 1955. Feb 26, 2016 - Texas - oil country

We drove across country to by-pass the Interstate because it was getting boring but now we realize why Interstate Highways exist, they get you quickly from a to b especially in Texas where the speed limit on the Interstate is 80 mph (135 kph). The secondary roads run through every small town and although you get to see more of the country it takes a LOT longer. We arrived in Midland, Texas by evening and found our motel quickly. Midland is in the centre of Texas oil country and there is lots of activity in spite of the low oil prices. It...

Sep 1, 2015 - Midland, TX

We left Carlsbad Caverns before 8a.m. which is early for us. We wanted to arrive in Midland, TX early enough to tour the George Bush childhood home. Well, we arrived back in the great state of Texas around 11 a.m. losing an hour since we entered the central time zone again. Lots of oil businesses going on along this drive. After picking up a quick coffee at our favorite truck stop, we headed east on I-20 to Midland. Unfortunately our GPS took us to the RV park a back way on a dirt road! I can't even begin to describe the dirt and dust on...

Apr 29, 2014 - Commemorative Air Force

Tyler and I went to several Tennessee Air Shows, held every two years, at Smyrna Airport, formally Sewart Air Force Base. We saw and got to touch aircraft from the past and current. But, one plane that was special, to me, was a World War II B-17 Flying Fortress. This is the plane that lead the way destroying Nazi Germany's means to make/produce war materials/weapons. That day we got to tour the cargo/bomb bay, Bombardiers' station, and cockpit. What stuck in my mind was the group of men that piloted and owned this piece of history. The...

Jan 17, 2014 - Midland, Texas

I wasn't really planning to do anything today except catch up on my travel journal and rest. My son, however, had to mention that high school football was a big deal in Texas...and especially in Midland. Naturally, then, I had to go find the high school. Well, Midland High is huge but no football field. Just a large grass area. A police car was in their parking lot so I drove up and asked where the football field was. Told him I had a son who wanted a picture of it. Ho Ho. He laughed and said he was from Colorado and couldn't believe how...

Jul 17, 2013 - Getting ready for the furniture and Goodbye

This morning we picked up the kids and headed to the airport to see the Commemorative Air Force (used to be the Confederate Air Force) which has their headquarters and a museum here in Midland. Very interesting museum, but very light on the WWII aircraft. All in all, a very good museum. We then took the kids back home, Kayden had a party with some kids with their church group, and then Charlotte and I ran out on several errands for Misty. I helped John do some laundry drying while Charlotte put shelf lining in the cupboards. They got a call...

Jul 16, 2013 - Helping and painting

Charlotte got up early this morning to wake Kayden and get him some breakfast because his dad was picking him up at 7:30 to take him to his High School football practice. After Kayden got off Charlotte sat down on the recliner to work on her Bible study and prayers. When I got up and walked out to the living room area I found all asleep, Charlotte in the recliner and Keaton and Auree on the sofa bed. I rousted them up and we grabbed some breakfast. Charlotte this morning is doing our laundry and had two volunteers, so I jumped in the car...
