This is the first day my computer has been out of its bag since last weekend. The front room (my art/computer area) has been ground zero for the flooring boxes. The flooring guys have been here every day since Monday. The noise level inside has been incredible, with an ongoing battle between the leaky air compressor and the boombox blaring country music. Our sanity is somewhat restored each day when they leave (around 3pm). I spend the afternoon sweeping the constantly replenishing layers of dust and flooring remains (they sweep before they...

We thought the floors were going to be started on Friday, but we got a call late Wednesday that all the old floors were going to be pulled up on Thursday. We are now back in the chaos, as furniture and all our things are strewn all over the place. Our WIFI was unplugged for two days. The new flooring started going in on Friday, but the guys quit early for the weekend, so it’s only about 40% done. They left the fridge, washer and dryer in the dining room, and the dining room table in the living room. We got a bit rebellious this morning and...

I had to start this one with the Dung Beetle. We have lots of them here, and they always make me chuckle. If you’ve never seen one, they are master logrollers: They climb up on round poop and move it by doing the “Fred Flintstone” thing with their legs and feet. Of course, it isn’t long before they lose their balance, tumble down, and have to start all over. I’m grateful because they help keep our ‘hood clean. But what a workout! We’ve recently learned that we need to look out the front window before opening the door to take Mo out in the...

Just as I’d anticipated, the countertop guy didn’t arrive Thursday until around 1:30pm, so the plumber had to put us off until today (he had a conference to go to in Austin). He is due here sometime around 11am. Other than that, the countertops went in without any problems (a first for this remodel), and they make a huge difference in the kitchen’s appearance. Most of the tops had been pre-cut, so the guys were done in less than two hours. I spent all day Friday loading up the lower cupboards and drawers. I found a heavy-duty, deep,...

We had spent several days with all the water shut off most of the time. The shut off box is alongside the driveway, a couple of feet deep into the ground, with a plastic cover. I can’t count how many times we had gone out there and turned the water on or off. Monday afternoon, one of the maintenance guys came out to read our meter (in the same box). Bill went out and chatted with the guy. He told the guy what we were having to do until the plumber came. The guy said “You know not to stick your hand down there without looking first, right?”...

I knew before he got here last Friday that the cabinet guy had forgotten to build the laundry room cabinets. But I didn’t know that the kitchen would also be missing the two upper cabinets on either side of the sink. The cabinet maker somehow “forgot” about the kitchen window when he initially measured for the job. So, the cabinets he brought were too large for the spaces. He gave them to us for free, and since they wouldn’t fit in the kitchen, Bill now has them for hardware/tool storage in the garage. I was not given a specific day (or...

The cabinet guys are here! Instead of being super-excited, I’m bummed because we think we hear a water leak under the house. When the plumber was here last week, he warned us that these homes were all built with cheap pipes, and lots of our neighbors have told us the same thing. This plumber is the same one everyone here uses and loves. He is honest, hard-working (he and his wife worked on our neighbor’s plumbing well after dark last night), and he doesn’t charge a fortune. He is so busy, though, that he can’t come out until maybe later on...

Jun 4, 2019 - Kerrville, TX

From Carlsbad, NM we headed SW on 285 to I-10 then east to Kerrville, TX. We have a nice spot on the Guadalupe River. We took a nice walk before dinner. I’m not sure 400 miles in 1 day was worth it but there’s not much in between. 285 was incredibly interesting and totally frustrating. Because of the oil boom in the Permian Basin, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian_Basin_(North_America) the old and outdated 2-lane road was congested most of the way. We followed a multitude of vehicles hauling oil production equipment and supplies. I was...

The demo guys (Mike and Brett) arrived at 9am yesterday morning. We couldn’t have asked for a nicer, or harder working couple of guys. Even though they are young (early 30’s?), they played 1960’s country music all day, like “Am I That Easy to Forget”, and “Old Lonesome Me”. Mike said today’s country music (except for Chris Stapleton) is more pop than country, so he prefers the music he grew up with. I was surprised that I knew nearly all the songs! We had one setback around mid-day. When they tried to disconnect the old fridge, they...

I think I forgot to tell this story. A couple weeks ago, when our friends came over for dinner, we were sitting at the dining room table after eating, and I started talking about the hummingbird feeder that hangs from the now infamous kitchen lizard tree. The feeder is in plain view of the dining room table. I was telling Lori and Denny that I hadn’t had any hummingbirds at the feeder yet, when one must have heard me and flew up to take a drink, in front of all of us! How awesome is that! Now that Bill has decided to make the 2nd garage...

We were out sitting on our neighbors’ porch last Sunday morning, just visiting (as we do with them most days), when a deer and her brand-new fawn came to the field right by us. This little one’s hind legs were still very wobbly, so mom led it over to some scrubs under one of the big trees. She somehow communicated to her baby that he was supposed to stay put until she came back, and then she trotted off, returning several hours later. This morning, there is another little one in the same area. He has huge dark brown eyes (see pic)! It’s...

This remodeling ‘symphony’ only works as long as each instrument plays at just the right time. Wednesday evening, the cabinet maker texted me that he wasn’t going to be ready for install on the 30th. He is now “hoping” to be ready on the 6th (of June). I’m glad I decided to get the demo, countertops, backsplash and flooring all done from the same Kerrville company. My ‘Go To’ person there is Gina, so I only had to call her with the bad news. She contacted everyone else, and here is our new (tentative) schedule: Demo is now June 3-4; surgery...
