Apr 27, 2013 - Attwater Prairie Chicken Wildlife Refuge

We drove 14 miles to visit the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge. It's the only refuge, and one of only 2 remaining habitats where these birds still live in the wild. In the '30s, the Prairie Chicken (similar to a Grouse or very large chicken) was hunted nearly to extinction. The grasslands where it nested were removed & farmland with short grass for cattle grazing replaced tall prairie grass. Today less than 1 percent of coastal prairies remain. Over a century ago, 1 million Prairie Chickens inhabited Texas & Louisianna....
