Sep 17, 2020 - Day 21 - Laughlin AFB FAMCAMP, Del Rio, TX

A couple of odd things greet LJ and I as we start our morning walk. First, there's loud pop music coming from one of the huge hangers. It hard to tell which one, but it must be really loud because we are quite far from any of the hangars and can hear the music distinctly. LJ heads towards the sound but a few minutes later the music stops and is replaced by a loud series of pops, almost like muffled gunfire. But it's not coming from one specific location; the pops travel along the runway from one end to the other. Almost like a sequence of...

2020 Orlando Trip

Sep 16, 2020 - Day 20 - Laughlin AFB FAMCAMP, Del Rio, TX

There's barely a hint of sunrise as LJ and I head out and get a first good look at our surroundings. And it's a red sky at that; maybe some weather heading our way. Wouldn't be surprised if Hurricane Sally is still influencing the weather this far west. There's a huge, nicely laid out picnic area beside the rv campground. Looks in really great shape with multiple big pavilions, BBQ grills and a massive playground set. I doubt if that gets much use in the summer. No flight activity this early in the morning; in fact, not much activity at...

Sep 15, 2020 - Day 19 - Laughlin AFB FAMCAMP, Del Rio, TX

The duck armada once again follows LJ and I as we walk around the pond this morning. At one point, he suddenly lunges at them, they scatter and I almost loose my grip on the leash. That might have gotten ugly. Back at the RV, I take some time to ponder our route for today. We still think we'll head west towards Del Rio and Laughlin AFB, which is supposed to have a very nice rv park. I try calling them about 9am but nobody answers the phone; maybe they're late risers in west Texas. It occurs to me that yesterday, when we exited I-10 in...

2020 Orlando Trip

Feb 16, 2018 - Del Rio, TX

Left one of our favorite national parks and headed to Del Rio, TX where we stayed at Broke Mill RV Park. Love this park, the owner remembers us from year to year. We always meet someone interesting here and this time we met a couple from Detroit, MI who were on their first retired trip. They told us how novice they felt, but were having a wonderful time. Couple days of rest here. My foot has been giving me some trouble and I am afraid one of the screws is working loose. People can now say I really do have a "screw loose"! Dale has recovered...

Winter 2018

Feb 9, 2018 - Judge Roy Bean slept here

Today we drove towards Roma some more. Geez this state is huge! Along the way we stopped at a town called Sanderson. We found a café called The Ranch House. I did not look like much from the outside, but there were a few cars there so we stopped for lunch. The steak special was not bad. The coolest thing about the place…most people were openly carrying pistols. Even the waitress! I was trying not to stare. Then two guys walked in wearing big belts full of bullets and big pistols strapped to their legs. I wish I took a picture but I didn’t....

Feb 1, 2018 - Run for the Border

Greetings from Texas! We started our trip last Saturday and per tradition, we left around 3:30 a.m. to get on the road before too much traffic. We had anticipated leaving about 2 weeks earlier however, we lost our awning to high winds and wanted to get our new one installed prior to leaving California. Because of that delay, we decided to put some miles under our belts the first few days. Our first stop, which wasn’t even planned until a few hours before arrival, was to visit a couple we met about a year ago at NWS Seal Beach. Don, a...

Aug 9, 2017 - Del Rio & Amistad

Aug 9, 2017 Last night was miserable. We cooled it down before going to bed but my 1:30 the temp was over 80 in the rig and even with the fan on I woke up/ Managed to get cap naps until 6 when I got up and opened the windows but it was 80 inside and out so that did not help much. We are now headed to Del Rio, Texas and the Amistad National Recreation Area. Had a wonderful time in San Antonio. Jane and Jerry are perfect hosts and it was great being with Aaron, Briana and the girls. I got to play in the pool with them, they were In the pool...

Off to Indianapolis

Jan 21, 2017 - Broke Mill RV Park, Del Rio, Texas

We had a lot of fun with our friends, but it was time to go and stay on schedule with our trip to Arizona. As you know we like the Corpus area and would have loved to stay for many weeks more. So we leave our friends behind, they'll stay here for a month or more and then move on themselves, but we'll see them again in 'Brenda, AZ when they come to visit us. We left NAS Corpus Christi just about 9 o'clock, taking the backroads, our favorite way to travel, it was a 299 miles drive to the Broke Mill RV Park. We called the park earlier to make...

Feb 11, 2016 - Del Rio, TX

Observation: Much more Border Patrol presence this year than in year's past. We have been through 5 checkpoints to date and all with drug sniffing dogs. They are traveling the dirt roads along side the highways and you see their vehicles everywhere. We traveled FM 170 to Hwy 118 to Hwy 385 to Hwy 90 into Del Rio where we stayed at Broke Mill RV Park. We had spent a night here last year, but we decided to stay several nights and explore the area. Weather was right at 80 and wonderful. We explored historic Del Rio. Some very old buildings...

Mar 27, 2015 - San Antonio, TX to Del Rio, TX

I started the day off on a bad foot, so to speak. As I was trying to carry two folding chairs up the steps into the RV, I lost my footing and started to fall backward out the door. I didn't fall, but in the process of trying to prevent myself from falling ass over teacup I seem to have done something to my left leg and ankle. It wasn't bad when we left the campground, but when we stopped to take a break and I stood up I knew there was going to be a problem. And when we got to our destination it was worse. Hopefully, it's nothing a good dose...

2015 Southwest Trip

Feb 21, 2015 - Seminole Canyon State Park, Del Rio Texas

Seminole Canyon State Park is about as remote as it gets. A few miles East of the Rio Grande lies a dry wash (Seminole Canyon) which contains numerous caves in which ancient peoples lived and recorded their memories. We saw the caves from above and used binoculars, but it was far too cold to take the hike down the canyon to see the petroglyphs up close. That will have to remain a side trip for future days. Another named arctic front hit during our stay here, and we have decided to head NorthWest as quickly as possible to escape the...
