I hopped up on the roof and was quite surprised to see only a few small branches. There was basically no rain with the storm. The drive was easy – we called the RV park to find...

Mar 11, 2020 - Amarillo, TX

Headed out US 287 to I-40 and into Amarillo, TX staying at the Big Texan RV Park. I-40 through Amarillo is all under construction so makes maneuvering around town here a bit of a challenge. Very nice weather until Friday 13th where it turned cloudy, rainy and very cold. We understand it is snowing at our place at home however so we aren't complaining too much. Dale had discovered a National Monument about 38 miles from here to visit called Alibates Flint Quarries. The canyon rims and mesas of this region above the Canadian River reveal more...

Winter 2020

Oct 19, 2019 - Amarillo

Our Saturday 300-mile drive to Amarillo was all on I-40 and, for the first time in a long while, not very scenic. We shared the driving and listened to an audio book to make the drive more pleasant. We lost an hour when we entered Texas and Central Time. We arrived at the Amarillo KOA and set up in a nice pull-thru will all connections, TV, and Sprint WIFI working. In addition, all four repaired parts worked. We have a policy of, whenever possible, spending a minimum of two nights at any stop. Our Sunday stay in Amarillo was quiet except...

We got up to see the Balloons takeoff one last time before leaving. We then went from Albuquerque, NM to Amarillo, TX. We had a tail wind, so it went smoothly. We stopped at Oasis in Amarillo and had some leftovers for dinner. We got some sleep for the following day to Yukon, OK.

Sep 21, 2019 - Amarillo to Albuquerque

The Long Drive Day 17 We awake to news of appalling floods in Texas resulting in 6 deaths. We feel very lucky to be on the northern edge of the bad weather. Although there is some evidence of last nights storms and the day is cloudy there is no disruption to our plans and the weather is set to improve again. Amarillo's star attraction is the Big Texan Steak Ranch where the steak is free if you are able to eat a 72oz steak with all the trimmings within an hour. I don't think this is a challenge I will be taking on as I have difficulty eating...

Sep 14, 2019 - 28th STOP - Amarillo, TX

9/14/19 - Left Albuquerque this morning heading for Amarillo, TX and the Big Texan Restaurant. Essentially desert-like except for one section at the end of NM and near the Texas border with fields of corn and other stuff. Flat with an absolutely straight section about 10 miles or more. Kay wanted to watch Judge Jennine (sp) so she called the Limo service for 6:00 to go to the Big Texan Restaurant. The Cadillac showed up, but half the horn was broken off, See the pic. Lots of pics of the inside of the restaurant. What a neat place. We...

May 22, 2019 - Day 6 - Big Texan RV Park, Amarillo, TX

Another beautiful morning in the high desert. The three C's - cool, clear and calm. But with the forecast for high winds and the prospect of some rough roads through the back country of New Mexico, we decide to try the med that our vet gave us for dog's with travel anxiety. Something called Trazodone. He was such a wreck yesterday, we figure it's worth the risk. We roll out around 0930 with the plan to stay on US 60 for the next couple of days. The first 100 miles is as spectacular as we remembered it from two years ago. Lush green rolling...

2019 Summer Big Trip

May 17, 2019 - Amarillo, Texas

We left Santa Rosa this morning about 0830 heading for Amarillo, Texas, about 167 miles. The weather was good with cloud cover consisting of white cumulus clouds in sky and a high wind that was for the most part a quartering crosswind that contained some pretty heavy gusts just to keep you from falling asleep. The New Mexico roads were not good from Santa Rosa, better that the I-5 in California, but not as good as the I-40 roadway we picked up when we crossed the New Mexico Texas border. The road surface changed for the good in Texas but...

Apr 27, 2019 - The Terrain Changes and a couple of Surprises

I have included in this post at least one picture that represents most of the terrain we saw in each state, so far. Surprises- Did you know you can go scuba diving in New Mexico? Well you can. In Santa Rosa, New Mexico there is a place called the Blue Hole. It is advertised as World Famous. I guess because where else can you scuba dive in New Mexico. Outside of Amarillo, TX is the second largest canyon in the United States. It's called Palo Duro Canyon. We were quite impressed with its color, size and depth. When we thought of Texas before...

Apr 26, 2019 - Amarillo, Texas

We left Albuquerque this morning and stopped at Camping World to get new water filters for the RV. We had high winds along our route today. Also along our route today we saw a gigantic cross called The Groom Cross, officially named "The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ." It rises 19 stories up from the Texas Panhandle. The other photo is part of the Stations of the Cross, life-size. We arrived at the Big Texan RV Ranch in Amarillo around 5:00. It is a large park with spacious sites, an indoor pool, spa, and sauna. We were escorted to our...

Back in Amarillo. We had the chance to see many of our friends: Lynn and George, Perry and Peggy, Richard and Lois, Danny and Linda. Richard put on big big spread of hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill. We have appointments with the optometrist and dentist in the next few days. I also have to renew my driver's license. ...
