Jul 23, 2018 - Deadwood

We drove to Deadwood today, something that Don specifically wanted to do on this trip. We took I-90, after a stop at Sams Club for fuel, through Sturgis, then south to Deadwood. From Sturgis to Deadwood, the road was curvy and we gained nearly 1000 feet in elevation. It looked like a really fun road for a motorcycle. In fact, it seems almost obligatory to have a Harley in this part of the country! Deadwood is larger than Cripple Creek, and with considerably fewer casinos, but otherwise like your typical old mining town. We enjoyed just...

Jul 18, 2018 - Mount Rushmore

The weather was perfect to visit the monument today. And we got lucky with light traffic also. I was surprised to be charged for parking, but then we were not charged an entry fee, so that evened out. Our first view of the monument was as we were driving in. Impressive from that distance but even more so as we walked at the base. Half of the Presidential Trail was closed due to construction but what we saw was well worth it. The approach was lined with all the individual state flags, along with date of entry into the union. In 1925 federal...

Susan and I decided to stay an extra day here. We needed to do laundry, return the rental car and get used to being 2 not 6. The gang pulled out at 6 am and we saw them off and then went back to bed! Got up later, did a little laundry and headed into Rapid City to have lunch at Olive Garden and replenish supplies at Wal Mart. Yes Tucker, we did look for :How to Train Your Dragon Part 2" but did not find it :) Came back to he campground and cleaned the RV and took the rental car back. I was talking to he agent and told him about not seeing...

Jul 17, 2018 - Rapid City

This was to be Pete, Elisabeth, Jack and Tucker's last day with us. Pete has to get back to Florida for a meeting on the 23rd and they are still a long way from home. We picked up a rental car and headed out to see Mount Rushmore. We wanted to get an early start since it can get quite crowded there and you can face really long lines to get into the parking lot. We were lucky in that the line was not long to park and we got a good place. You emerge from the parking garage and stare right up at the mountain. It is very patriotic. The weather...

Finally we will be able to stay in one place for a bit as we have reservations in another of our club RV parks. It is quite large, but we were able to get a fairly nice spot way at the back of the park under some tall pines. And the driveway is actually long enough to accommodate both the trailer and the truck without sticking out in the road. After getting set up, we drove to the nearest Walmart to try again to get his prescription filled. And his eye appointment is scheduled for Tuesday.

May 26, 2018 - Jewel Caves, Iron Mountain Highway, Crazy Horse Monument

Today, we are off to the western side of Custer State Park. We started our day driving back to Mt Rushmore to see the museum, learning how it was built. We also took a short walk below the monument. It was short because most of the trails are still closed and park tours have not started yet. It was very informative. After leaving Mt Rushmore, we drove the Iron Mountain Highway. It has some beautiful scenery but the most impressive sight was looking through some of the tunnels and look at Mt Rushmore at the same time. The tunnels are not...

Aug 28, 2017 - Rapid City, SD

Monday dawned hot and clear (except for the smoke haze). Since the Jeep was still having trouble, Jeni loaded up her kids in her big beastmobile (read GMC Denali) and met us at Moorcroft, Wyo where we hitched the trailer to her vehicle and the Jeep could run free. We drove to the KOA near her house. Another nice park. As it turned out we ended up spending 10 days in Rapid City, to finally get the Jeep sorted out and running. Since Jeni and family were near by it was a great place to be. There were several highlights during the time. On Wed...

Aug 9, 2017 - Rapid City SD

Wed, 09 Aug: Plan "B" springs into action—again! RVers, by nature, must be flexible to avoid madness. Things don't always go as planned, and if you must rigidly adhere to a predetermined Plan you'll become a rubber room candidate. Today was an excellent example of Plan "A" failing and Plan "B" working just fine. We left our campsite at Theodore Roosevelt National Park's Juniper Campground and drove a short distance to the dump station. After eight days our waste tanks were getting a tad full and our fresh water tank could use a...

May 20, 2017 - Rapid City and Mount Rushmore

. After lunch and some wandering around at Wall Drug, Hazel and I headed for Three Flags RV Park, about 100 miles away and just north of Rapid City. With our "Passport America" membership, five nights was half-price, about a hundred bucks, and they even threw in a cable TV box. . It was raining when we got to the camp, and it rained off and on for the first couple of days, allowing us to catch up on our sleep, reading, and 'way too many stories on cable tv news shows about the president and the Russians. By Tuesday, the weather was still...

Oct 1, 2016 - Bull Riding

I forgot to mention that we went to a Bull Riding Competition one evening. Quite an experience for a bunch of tenderfeet. We also spoke with some very nice folks who were exhibiting barrel racing saddles since there had been a barrel racing event earlier in the day. Who knew that there are different saddles for different events and the man and woman we spoke with were very patient with the questions we had about why the saddles are different and the technique for barrel racing. These folks could not have been nicer and asked us what the...
