Sep 16, 2013 - OTRA - SD - Interior

On the road about 10:30 for our journey to Kadoka, SD under overcast skies. The scene is changing from miles of soybeans and corn to include more and more cattle and the addition of sorghum to the crops and from flat lands to gently rolling hills but the roads still go straight on forever. Started seeing signs for Al’s Oasis, a place that turned out to look like a bunch of stores in an old timey western town setting but we drove right on past this one. Crossed the Missouri River and entered the Mountain Time Zone about 85 miles later at...

Aug 23, 2013 - Badlands National Park

We left camp and headed straight EAST to the Badlands National Park. We were told that we should try to enter the park through Wall, SD. If we had come into the park a different way, we surely would have missed something. Something BIG! Wall Drug, or just Wall, is a tourist attraction like South of the Boarder in North and South Carolina. As on I-95 on the east coast, I-90 holds miles of billboards telling you about Wall Drug and what they offer. It was a great "stop & rest kind of place" and very unique with its shops and restaurants. We...

Aug 23, 2013 - Badlands KOA

We are here for 3 nights to visit the Badlands. So far they are different than what we saw at Teddy's Park. Interior, SD is the oldest Badlands town, dating back to the 1880s. Originally, Interior was located along the Big White River. When the railroad came, it moved one mile north. The town is just outside the south gate of Badlands National Park. Public lands near Interior hold South Dakota’s premier agate beds for rock hunters.

Aug 15, 2013 - The Badlands, SD

Well, here we are in the Badlands of SD. We left Sioux Falls and traveled west on 90 almost the entire trip. Flat, endless farmland for 300+ miles. The woman at the rest area said they travel 2-3 hours to shop. Almost no roads visible from 90 and the speed limit is 75. Crossed another time zone to Mountain Time. Have now lost 2 hours! We arrived at the Badlands National Park mid-afternoon on the 14th. We can't begin to describe this area. We both filled up at the first sight of the multi-colored bluffs. I've included many photos and hope...

Aug 10, 2013 - Badlands South Dakota

From Cedar Pass Campground Badlands National Park We had a long day of traveling today. Once we reached I-90 we watched hundreds of motorcycles and RV’s going East from Sturgis, the big Harley Davidson rally. We got to the campground around 5:00 but we had left at 8:00 and gained an hour going into mountain time. We had no water or sewer at our site but had 50 amp electric. The view was fantastic. We got dinner and ate outside. The picnic table had a cover over it and a nice view of the mounds. We took the girls for a walk and then the...

Aug 1, 2013 - Deep in the Black Hills.... With No Cell Service

The morning started out with a trip to 1880s Town. We decided dressing in appropriate attire was a reasonable activity. Did you know it is only $5 to get all dressed up? Tourists even took pictures with us as they thought we are authentic items in the town. From there we got back in our regular clothes. We really wanted to take the dress up ones with us, but we decided THAT was a bit ridiculous. The next stop was a driving tour through the Badlands where we saw mountain sheep, a rare sight. We seemed to be ahead of the traffic, which was...

Thos morning we madebit up to Devil's Tower early. We took a 1.5 miles hike around the base. The top of rhe trail was beautiful. We learned of an old climbing ladder used on the first ascent and even spotted it. Good thing we were ahead of the people again. On the way down we encounterd a Chinese tour bus group!

Go West!

Jul 1, 2013 - Into the West

Headed to S. Dakota looks like once we hit Rt 90, we drive STRAIGHT for 350 miles. Maybe Heather will do some practice driving on her permit? NOT! Got to the Badlands. It took us a total of about 10 hours, we stopped for lunch and wandered around the WORLD'S ONLY CORN PALACE for awhile. And, of course there was that pesky time change thing and we had to relive another hour of driving. I can't wait to go forward in time for a change. So S. Dakota is FLAT and one road, so the billboards were some very good reading. luckily we left Minnesota...

Jun 28, 2013 - The Badlands

After leaving Wall, SD, we went on to a very small town in the Badlands of South Dakota called Interior. In order to get to the town, we had to drive through the Badlands National Park. Luckily, Jay just got his senior pass a couple weeks ago, so we didn't have to pay any admission. We made one stop at an overlook and from anywhere in the park, you can definitely see how it got its name. What a desolate, harsh place….yet beautiful. When we got to the campground in the town of Interior, it wasn't much different except that the Badland...

Jun 2, 2013 - Badlands NP, SD

We head west to the Badlands National Park and other attractions in the southwest corner of South Dakota. Among the attractions are ... Wall Drug! We started seeing the billboards along the highway at about 300 miles away for the biggest and most famous pharmacy in the world. Since then we have seen about 100 (not a typo!) billboards for this one location. BTW, billboards don't do anything for the scenery. I am glad that Vermont outlaws them and I wish more states would do likewise. We didn't plan on it, but we HAD to visit Wall Drug. It...
