Aug 28, 2018 - Custer and Black Hills Nat'l Forest

A day later than planned, but can't say enough about the great folks (and campsite) at Custer's Gulch RV; absolutely no traffic noise, large sites and conveniently located. Mt Rushmore was AMAZING!! Traveled most of the roads through Black Hills Nat'l Forest including Needles Hwy - not for the faint of heart. Disappointed with Crazy Horse monument-in-the-making, but other than that, the two days we spent in the park were outstanding - glad we stayed to the less traveled south side. The 1880's train between Keystone and Hill City was well...

Jun 18, 2018 - Custer, SD

June 18-22, Buffalo Ridge RV Park, Custer South Dakota (Black Hills) Reminder, Scott was able to make reservations for this trip only until Red Bay Alabama as we didn’t know how long it would take. So, Scott was a flurry of activity the day before our coach was finished and he included the agreed upon stops and he took what he could get in terms of 50 amp big rig sites. This RV Park is undergoing construction and we were given tickets to the Buffalo Ridge Theatre as compensation. I read the show was country music and didn’t want to go....

Jun 5, 2018 - Mount Rushmore

Yesterday we traveled from Montana and now are in South Dakota!! Montana was as far north as we planned to go this time, and we are now taking a southern turn toward home but still have about 1 1/2 weeks left with several stops along the way. We are at Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort about 20 miles south from Mount Rushmore. This is a great location with a great view of the mountains. We are without TV but do have WIFI. This morning we took off to see Mount Rushmore. We heard how beautiful the drive was and as we drove (without the camper) which...

Jun 18, 2017 - Custer, SD - Broken Arrow Campground

/// Broken Arrow Campground Custer, SD Sunday – June 18, 2017 - HAPPY FATHERS DAY....!!! A Travel Day: We got an early start departing Sidney, NE by 7:30 A.M. Our route today would take us north on US385 all the way to Custer, SD., a distance of 220 miles. The road conditions today were good, the traffic was very light and weather was pleasant. We made very good time, stopping just once in Chadron, NE., to kick the tires and make a quick stop at Walmart. The FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY DRW KING RANCH was as anxious as I was to get to Custer. I...

May 24, 2017 - Wind Caves Nat Pk, Custer St Pk, and Crazy Horse Memorial

Beautiful, fun day again! 32 degrees here last night, but wasn't supposed to be that cold. Our little heater ran off and on all night, and kept us cozy. Sunny right now and about 75 here in the park. We drove in and out of the Black Hills National Forest today. We left the campground at 8 am and headed to the Wind Caves National Park. We didn't go down in the caves as we've done that so many times before. We drove through the beautiful park seeing lots and lots of prairie dogs. They are so cute, but I believe they are a nuisance due to the...

May 23, 2017 - Wall, SD to Custer, SD (Mt. Rushmore and Badlands)

Fun day today. Partly sunny and in the 60's, but real windy. Cool, but not cold, except early in the am. We left Wall about 7:15 am and headed to the Badlands. It is so beautiful there. The rock formations were gorgeous, and it goes on for miles and miles. The roads were really good. We saw several Prong horn sheep in one area, and they did not seem to fear us or the cars going by. We walked along the Cliff Nature Trail. It was a very nice walk, with several stairs and boardwalks in most places. There also were signs to watch for...

May 14, 2017 - May 14 2017 Custer, SD

Greetings Folks, A note that I forgot about yesterday: Weather was 82F, light blue sky and full sunshine. Today it was 66F and partly / mostly sunny. We drove 360 miles today. Some of that was doing the touristy stuff around Custer, SD. We left at 0505 am and drove about 175 miles at 70 mph. Then the darn wind came up and tried to push us off the road. Had to drop speed to 60 mph to stay in my lane. Fuel mileage dropped to 9 mpg fighting a 35 mph head wind for 140 miles. Not much fun. BUT......it got better, and I mean a lot better. We saw...

Oct 12, 2016 - A Cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Were you aware that Google Maps announces when you cross into a new state? I was quite surprised as I was in Nebraska driving north, when I heard, "welcome to South Dakota". I never even saw a sign! As we entered South Dakota, the land was vast, beautiful and roaming with buffalo! What a rare treat to see. We stayed the first night in South Dakota at an RV park in Hot Springs. We then rented a cabin in Custer, South Dakota for 4 days. I could immediately see why South Dakota was chosen for Mount Rushmore as there are rock formations...

Gypsy Journey

Oct 3, 2016 - Take me back to the black hills, the black hills of Dakota...

Custer is an excellent base for visiting Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. It’s just that this morning we awoke to rain and grey skies. So, instead of going to those places to see cloud, we visited the Wind Cave. I was a bit worried going there… I’m claustrophobic. However, the caves weren’t very small, they had paved walkways and lights, so I didn’t have anything to worry about. We had lunch at a Chinese buffet in Hot Springs (town name, not physical location of the food of said Chinese buffet). Oh how I miss Asian food. Then off to an...

Sep 8, 2016 - Sylvan Lake...

Today Judi & I hiked around Sylvan Lake, known by many as the "crown jewel" of Custer State Park. This is one of our favorite lakes & certainly is the prettiest in the park. Created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch, it offers picnic areas, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming, and hiking trails. It is also popular as a starting point for excursions to Harney Peak (recently renamed Black Elk) and The Needles. Several friends have made the trek to the top of the peak but it's a bit too much for this young...

Sep 7, 2016 - Labor Day gathering...

Last Monday we spent the day/evening at our friend Jan Speirs cabin located along the Mickelson Trail outside of Mystic, SD. We've wanted to see her cabin for a couple of years & were finally able to fit the day into everyone's schedule. It was Labor Day so of course we needed to grill, but three of us were also celebrating birthday's so presents, cupcakes & ice cream were also on the menu. After dinner we went for a walk along the Rapid Creek to view the surrounding cabins/woods & walk off our meal. Jan has a nice golf cart so Larry...
