Jul 22, 2013 - Cactus Flat, South Dakota

Julian-July 22, Cactus Flats SD We had a good night sleep, the tent smell did not last long, its a good job that we sealed the tent, as we woke up to a thunder storm at about 6:45 this morning. As there was nothing that we could do, we just rolled over and went back to sleep. The rain lasted about ½ hour, and we rolled out of the tent about 7:30. Even though we thought we were prepared, we obviously weren’t as things did get wet. It took us until about 9:00 to clean up the camp site and leave, we stopped at a bowling alley down the road...

May 26, 2011 - Ellsworth AFB - Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Just an administrative point - we did this visit along with the Badlands National Park on the way back from Pierre, but because I am doing the write-ups separately, I am showing where it is located on the map, but it was not a separate trip from Ellsworth per se like the map indicates. Sep 3, 2008 - Badlands National Park, SD

The trip to Badlands National Park was only about 110 miles. We stopped at Wall, SD which has been made "famous" by Wall Drug which opened in 1931. It is an interesting, colorful "tourist trap" in this small town. The drugstore established it's success when it began offering free ice water to the tourists passing by on the highway. The free water was advertised on "Burma Shave" signs posted along the highway. Most of the tourist traffic was headed to or from Mt Rushmore. Wall Drug still has signs along the highway for miles going East &...

Jun 27, 2008 - Presho, SD to Cactus Flat

Wow, what a night! It was after 3 AM when most of the storms around us let up. It was pretty hard to get my eyes open this morning. But we are on the road at 6:55 AM (CT)! It's very cool (63 degrees) but feels good after the "sauna" last night. It's very overcast & still many black clouds & severe weather to the N of us. It poured for a few minutes (while Ron was disconnecting the water & electric of course), but then it stopped & we ended up having an overcast but pretty nice morning - good for driving! We never saw much of Presho - guess...
