Jul 21, 2017 - Melgaard Park Campground

/// Melgaard Campground Aberdeen, SD Two night stay at this nice little city park campground in Aberdeen, SD After several nights of stormy weather Nancy decided she could not take it any longer. This morning we packed up and departed early. I called ahead to our next scheduled stop to see if we could get in early but there was no room at the Inn. We called Wylie Campground in Aberdeen and same story. Apparently this is a busy weekend for campers. The agent at Wylie's suggested this campground but cautioned that it is a first come - first...

Sep 15, 2016 - Sunflower State

Aberdeen, SD It was a pretty uneventful day. Pierre is the capital of SD so we checked out the capitol building which we could actually see from the window of our hotel room. It is not the prettiest capitol building we have ever seen but the grounds are lovely. The floor in the capitol building is made of terrazzo tile. Fact for the day: it is said the floor was laid by 66 Italian artists. To give these artists a chance to place a mark in the building (without actually signing their names to the floor), each is said to have been given a...

Jun 13, 2016 - Aberdeen, South Dakota

John and I spent time last light with the map. Aberdeen, South Dakota is the right distance for today. It has a Good Sam’s Campground. We are only on the interstate for fifteen miles. All is good. After the short distance east on the interstate, we head south on eighty-three. We stop in Linton. I read about a store called A Touch of Honey. It is closed. We find a restaurant for a late breakfast. Fortunately, I ask the restaurant owner about the honey store. “Stop up the road where they make the honey. It is near the John Deere store.” I...

May 28, 2016 - Cleaning day

Not much to write about today, it rained off and on pretty much all day. We spent the day cleaning inside and out. We're hoping to get an early start tomorrow. We've heard that the campgrounds and parks are filled with the oilfield workers in North Dakota so we're hoping to bypass that and get across the border. Karen has been keeping me well fed with cake and strawberries and cookies. We grilled a couple nice ribeyes for supper, yum. We took our evening walk and I did manage to get a picture of this pretty girl.

May 27, 2016 - Fairground?

A pretty good storm passed south and east of us about sundown last evening. It looked pretty intense. I was up at 6 with a mission on my mind. The battery in the Tracker was dead when we stopped for the night. So I got the generator started, coffee going and battery charger hooked up to the Tracker. While that was charging I cleaned off the front cap and windshield then waxed and Rain'Xed.(where is Cuz?) That was tbe most bugs yet for one days driving. I should have taken a before picture but I didn't but I did take an after picture. (See...

May 26, 2016 - South Dakota

We drove in some heavy rain yesterday. Last night we had thunder and lightning which made for some good sleeping with the widows open, we both slept in until 7:30. That was nice. We drove northwest into South Dakota on the secondary roads. We've tried to stay off the interstates as much as possible which is why we don't make many miles. We drove up Summit hill, 7 mile climb. ( pic) A little further on we came upon a giant pile of wheat on the ground, they must of had quite a harvest. (pic) They were loading it on a train. A real nice day...

Sep 26, 2014 - Aberdeen, SD - Heading North

(Ron Writing) This morning the weatherman predicted that the very nice fall weather we’re having in the upper Midwest will continue for at least 10 more days. So we left Sioux Falls heading north. We took a series of state and county highways to our “hometown” of Madison, SD (birthplace of Mary Hart co-host of Entertainment Tonight). We stopped at our mail forwarding service to pick up our mail and then continued northwest. This area of SD it is quite sparsely populated. Most of the land is used for farming corn, beans, or alfalfa, with...

Oct 7, 2011 - Aberdeen, SD

Oct 7 Woke up this morning to clearing skies, no rain, but cold and windy. Worried about RG, can’t get him to eat and all he wants to do is hide under the covers. He did eat some yogurt and snackies though. Will try and find some different food tonight. This section of North Dakota is corn fields and sunflower fields. The front seat of this car looks like the cockpit of a plane, with both the laptop and a separate huge monitor, but at least I can follow the route this way. We are in a wildlife refuge and a pheasant just ran across the...

Sep 6, 2011 - Sighting of the Black Hills

Today was a long drive day and we ended up spending the night at the local Super Wal*Mart parking lot. During the drive today we came across some interesting things. First thing we came across was the Ben Ash Monument, Ben Ash was the first to sight the Black Hills. Also in the same location was a grave yard we notice by the name of Monument Hill Cemetery with the Perry family buried there. The grave yard was locked so I took a photo through the fence. Then driving down the road we ended up behind the wildest looking tractor. Tom could...

Another peaceful night sleeping at Uncle Wally's. Decide since we won't be seeing his friend in Sioux Falls, maybe I can call a dealer there and see about getting that fan cover fixed? They don't open though until 8:30...so I wait. Call them back and he tells me that he can't work us in. Too busy. First time we've been told that on our trip. Suggests that if we're going straight up 29, to see if Fargo or even Bismarck since we're going that way. Find a dealer in Bismarck...nope, they're swamped, can't get to us for two weeks. I tell Sam,...
