Oct 29, 2019 - Gaffney, SC - Freightliner Custom Chassis Service Center

Our trip from Waynesville, NC to Gaffney, SC was a quick 113 miles down I-40, I26 to Spartanburg and then I-85 24 miles over to Gaffney. There was lots of construction the whole way on I-85 which caused a little delay but mostly caused my knuckles to be a little whiter!!! We have already checked into the service center and are scheduled to go into service between 8:00 and 8:30 tomorrow so hopefully will be out and on our way by noon. We will then drive a short ways to Kinards, SC for one-night stay.

Apr 22, 2019 - Gaffney

We are working our way toward Pennsylvania with a plan to spend two nights at each of three stops along the way. The first stop was at the Spartansburg/Gaffney KOA. We have been to Gaffney several times in the past to have work done at the Freightliner Manufacturing Service Center. We had a quiet visit this time with the highlight being dinner at Fatz underneath the famously infamous peach water tower. Fatz has good southern food. From here it is on to Wytheville.

Sep 10, 2018 - on the horns of a dilemma

When a motor home is built, the manufacturer usually buys the chassis from another company and puts the "living" part of the house on top of it. When our slide wall was not working properly, we called Newmar the manufacturer. Every so often we visit Freightliner, the manufacturer of our chassis. We know that we have some engine recalls to take care of and routine maintenance like oil change and generator servicing. It's good to get things checked out every few years. There are Freightliner facilities across the country since many long...

Nov 5, 2017 - Gaffney, SC - Freightliner Service Center

******************* OOPS, FORGOT TO POST THIS LAST NIGHT - SORRY!! ************* Our trip from Waynesville, NC to Gaffney, SC was an easy 112 mile trip, taking a little more than two hours, almost all of it on I-40, I-26 and I-85. It was overcast all the way so the colors of the trees were not always at their best. We also encountered some very dense fog just before entering South Carolina - apparently a frequent problem in that area as there were permanent signs warning of the foggy area. We are staying at the Freightliner Service Center...

Jun 20, 2017 - Gaffney, SC

Arrived at the Freightliner Custom Chassis factory service center in Gaffney, SC. Our odometer is not correct and we needed to get an official printout of our real mileage from the engine computer. Our extended service contract people requested official documentation. In the past when there was an odometer problem the manufacturer could just correct the odometer but that is now illegal so we have to live with the situation. Since we did not have an appointment, we had to hang around for a couple days before getting the required service.

Jun 4, 2017 - Wandering around Gaffney, SC

We wandered around Gaffney today looking for interesting things about town. Being Sunday and in the southern belt, a lot of places were closed. We visited the (famous?) Peachoid water tower. Kevin Spacey made this more well known by having it in an episode on The House of Cards. We also visited the Cowpens National Battlefield. A battle that lasted less than a hour, yet turned a tide during the Revolutionary War. What these men were willing to sacrifice for their freedom from the British rule, give special meaning to the word Patriot....

Jun 3, 2017 - Freightliner training class

South Carolina, we're here!! We arrived at Gaffney, SC today camping at the local KOA. We plan on staying 4 days. I have two days of Freightliner Chassis training. Most are probably asking "what is that"? All motorhomes are assembled on some type of "chassis". They include the wheels, steering, instrumentation, motor, hydraulics, generator, etc. They are pre-built in this manner and shipped to the motorhome factories. The motorhome factories put all the other "stuff" on the chassis. The body, insides, outsides, etc. that makes up the...

Nov 1, 2016 - getting a check up

A short drive has brought us to the Freightliner RV facility where we are camped with about twenty other rigs. Sadly, this is not a place where we can get our slide out repaired; it hasn't slid out since we left home. Freightliner manufactured our chassis - the engine and parts that touch the ground. Newmar built the motor home on top of the chassis, so one of their authorized technicians will have to get that slide going again. We are here for a two year check up and as far as we know, have no issues that need to be addressed besides an...

Oct 15, 2016 - Gaffney, SC

The number one attraction in Gaffney, on Trip Advisor, is the Peachoid. The city's spherical water tower is orange with a green leaf at the top! Number two is the Gaffney Outlet Center and a few notches down is the Freightliner factory tour at 10am weekdays. Sunday we drove to the Cowpens Revolutionary Battlefield, so named as it was a grazing area for cows at the time. This less than 1 hour battle was a major victory for the Colonists and a surprise since the British had more men and armament. Most South Carolina counties enforce the...

Aug 24, 2016 - Cars, cars, and more cars

Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord, North Carolina. Today was sightseeing for Mike. It was a short drive day and then we pulled into Glenwood Acres RV Park, across the street from the speedway. Man that place is huge. Got everything set up and off we went. First was Hendrick Motorsports Museum. This is just down the road on Papa Joe Hendricks Road, a huge complex. We toured the museum, free, saw all the winning Hendrick’s cars and memorabilia. Then it was over to the “shop” where we could watch from afar the guys working on new cars. Then...

Mar 10, 2015 - Camp Freightliner

Today's blog entry has been done by a special guest writer, whose desire to attend Camp Freightliner bought us to Gaffney: Spending $200k plus on a motorhome makes us want to keep it in good shape for future travels. The chassis costs between $90-$190k of the final price so it is a major component in a motorhome. Time spent in Gaffney, SC is not really a vacation but a learning opportunity. Our motorhome chassis (the running gear, engine, suspension, tires, brakes, etc.) was manufactured by Freigthliner Custom Chassis in Gaffney. Motorhomes...

Nov 10, 2014 - Forest Lake and Freightliner

Our first overnight stop was at the Walmart in Winchester, VA. We have stayed at this Walmart in the past and find it to be very convenient except for the in-store Subway Store who is not interested in providing customers with their morning coffee. Our next stop was at the Thousand Trails Forest Lake Preserve in Advance, NC. Halloween is a major event at this park and signifies the end of the summer season, although they are open all year. They have a contest for the best Halloween decorations which makes walking around the park fun....
