Jul 21, 2011 - Day 10: At rest in Irwin, PA

Today was a day of rest. We enjoyed the Evering's home. I did laundry - even on vacation that duty comes around often. We watched some TV, did email, etc. Doug fixed a great supper - we left some for Wanda Leah who had to teach an evening class - of pork chops, sweet potato, rice & stewed tomatoes, and green beans! He's quite the griller. After Wanda Leah got home, we sat on the porch, enjoying a glass of wine and conversation. There was a nice evening breeze with lots of fireflies! Good company, good times.

Today we came back to the Norwin Elks Lodge for the Labor Day weekend festivities they invited us to attend, and to have somewhere to stay over the holiday weekend. One of the sights we saw along the way was a large Indian. He is part of the family of Muffler Men in the United States. You can go to Muffler Men to read more about them. There was field after field of grape vinyards along the highway south of Buffalo, NY to Erie, PA. Must be good weather for growing grapes along the lake.

Here we are at our "home away from home", the Norwin-Manor Elks Lodge in Manor, PA. Our journey here from Charleston, WV was a long slow one filled with road construction delays and detours. We had our GPS set on "no toll roads" which was probably a mistake. There is a toll highway that ran somewhat parallel to the route we took that would have gotten us there much sooner and less frazzled. Pennsylvania is full of hills and windy rural roads that do not go North/South or East/West, only squiggly. And many of the rural roads are even more...

We left New York and will be heading for an eventual destination of the Chicago area after Labor Day. Cheryl's cousin has been watching her little granddaughter all summer and said if we came for a visit after Labor Day they would have more quality time for us. So first we came back to Manor Elks Lodge, our home away from home. It was a long travel day with traffic delays. As we came south through Pittsburg on the freeway our GPS said to keep left as we transitioned to the eastbound freeway. Well, we were one lane too far left which became...

Sorry no photos. We have left the Lake Pymatuning campground and are back at the Elks Lodge in Manor, PA. It looks like we will be here for several weeks using this as a home base. We made it 4 continuous days without rain but are now under severe thunderstorm warnings again. Does it ever quit raining around here?

Cheryl and I made a break West yesterday from the Allentown area to try and get dry. We took the PA Turnpike (I-70/76) which is a toll highway, but it got us across from Philly to Pittsburg faster. The toll for the whole way was $28. We are in Manor, PA. and are staying at the Norwin Elks Lodge (in the city of Irwin). This is a must if you are ever in the area. Part of the lodge is in an old mansion built in the late 1800's. They say it is haunted by the previous owner, and two other ghosts. They added on to the house and it all sits on a...
