A week spent in the Steens Mountain area is not enough time to see & explore all there is to experience. The weather was warm & dry. Coyotes howling at dusk & early morning was a delight. History, nature and God's handiwork in abundance. If you plan a trip there, be sure to get lots of brochures from any ranger station, so you won't miss something of interest to you.

Bill ran a couple of miles and got back in the hot springs before we left. I watched a fighter jet circle over and then fire 3 shots or maybe practice missiles. I thought at first that the jet had blown up but then heard it in the distance. Must be a training facility around since we are in a very desolate area. It was 4 miles back to the refuge headquarters and then 49 to French Glen which is the first town back on a paved road. (Ron Writing) This morning it was bright and sunny but only 35°. This reinforced our decision that it was time to head south. After breakfastwe headed south on US-395. We’ve driven parts of US-395, which runs north and south from border to border, but never this section in Oregon. It runs through a very sparsely populated area with widely separated small towns, a few very large ranches, and National forest land. Most of the drive was at elevations of 4,500’ to 5,000’.
