This morning we hiked along an old railbed trail starting at the campground. It parallels the Deschutes river but up high with a view of where the river empties into the Columbia river. It was a beautiful hike with lots of spring flowers. 118,000 trees were planted along the Deschutes river early in the century making it quite lush and beautiful. Jun 1, 2011 - Smith Rock Oregon State Park

Today we drove north on state road 97 headed for the Columbia River Gorge area. As we passed through a small town, Terrebone, I saw a sign “Smith Rock State Park- ½ mile”. I read it out loud and Russell said, “Do you want to check it out”? He turned right at the corner and off we went to see Smith Rock. Expecting a picnic area and a large rock, we couldn’t believe it when this massive, many colored rock formation and beautiful, fast flowing river awaited our explorations.
