Jun 10, 2019 - Wilmington, NC-Hollywood of the East

We left Washington, DC and began our trek back to Wilmington, NC. We spent a couple nights in Durham, NC at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds; first time camping at a fairground. One day there was a flea market on the grounds and adjacent to the campground was an equestrian show. We were fortunate that the Durham Bulls, the AAA team for the Tampa Bay Rays was in town-we really enjoyed the game and we thank them for giving back to the military with free tickets. We arrived in Wilmington on June 2nd, the day before my wrist surgery. As...

Apr 19, 2019 - Pre-Adventure Jitters

I will turn 70 on May 4. A while ago I had a wild idea that I would celebrate my 70th birthday by riding my motorcycle across the country (and back). I quickly dismissed this hair-brained idea as foolish, out of the question, "youcan'tdothat" and "youretooold". The more I started thinking about it, the more it appealed to me. My partner (in crime) was willing to go with me. Truth be told, he has been pushing this idea for a while. Crap. I am now committed (or should be) to going! The trip starts on Thursday, April 25. Preparations began a...

Aug 30, 2017 - Observations and Family - Aug. 21,22,23

Just two more stops. We drove 5 hours from DC to Roanke Rapids,NC and stopped for the night. Virginia did not have even one rest area. So we stopped at a McDonald's that was so filthy it didn't seem safe to even buy a coke, let alone food. I keep a couple Lysol wipes in my purse or I would not have used the bathroom. Which may explain why we saw four different times, cars stopped along the highway, and men urinating on the side of the road.one family was pulled over and doing the deed in a cotton field. Wilmington, NC is the home of my...

The Long Way Home

May 19, 2017 - Day 8 Shallotte to Wilmington 59 miles

Relatively easy day, cool late into the morning and we finished by 2 pm. Nice ferry crossing and ride up the coast. Many nice little towns. NC roads not all that great but at least drivers courteous. Took public bus downtown and had dinner. Absolutely great historic city and port, tons of restaurants and bars, nice retail stores and galleries, none of the trashy tourist crap that Key West allows. Really vibrant downtown and I would like to come back during the holidays. Our motel leaves a lot to be desired, I think people are LIVING in many...

LUCKY 58

Apr 18, 2016 - Wilmington, NC

Tonight we're in Wilmington NC KOA. Driving up US-17 through Charleston and Myrtle Beach into Wilmington brought us back to the real world of traffic and congestion. It took about 4:30 hours to travel the 210 miles. We'll be here for one night and then continue on Northward. We plan on following US-17 up into the Virginia Beach area and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. We stopped for a burger at the Ogden Tap Room, a place we've visited before. Ellen was very happy to find their Monday evening customer draw was free bingo. The prizes were...

Feb 26, 2016 - Exploring Wilmington

We left New Bern yesterday and traveled south on US 17 about 100 miles to a KOA in Wilmington, NC. There are quite a few Wilmington in the US. Wilmington, NC, Wilmington, DE, Wilmington, MA, and Wilmington, VT are all named in honor Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington. We've passed through Wilmington several times, but never stopped to explore. Since we got in early yesterday, we drove into town to look around. Wilmington is situated on the Cape Fear River. The area along the river has a lot of hotels, restaurants, and shops. We stopped...

2016 Winter Trek

Nov 26, 2015 - Thanksgiving

Yesterday we drove around taking photos of houses and places I've seen in the movies. We also went to Michael Jordan's high school too. Levon Hayes' plantation house is real ( from Hart of Dixie) and it's incredibly beautiful but we just took a few quick photos at the front gate. I have better photos but I haven't downloaded them to my iPad yet. Zoe Hart's medical practice is real too but not as lovely as in the show, I think they have let it get run down a bit since it was originally filmed. There were lots of security cameras outside...

J in the USA!

Aug 3, 2015 - Monday Wilmington NC

Our stay in Myrtle Beach has come to an end, time to return to the real life for some. We got everything put away and started our journey north. We will make a stop in Wilmington North Carolina for the boys to get a glimpse of a real US Navy Battleship, the USS North Carolina BB55 from World War II. As we were leaving it started to rain, the first we have had since being here, our weather was great. As we drove north we did get out of the rain and the sun was shining. We arrived at the USS North Carolina and it had been raining before we...

Jul 10, 2015 - DAY ONE! (Catchy title, huh?)

At 10:27edt we departed Wilmington. My back feels like someone snapped it, Larry is sneezing and snotting to beat the band and feeling anxious (pain pill withdrawal) and Heidi is jumping from dashboard to floor every few minutes. AND WE COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. Another journey underway. Just wish the Papa 3000 (Tyler's name for our RV) was packed with our friends and family. Shari, I wish you were here to photograph stuff. And Sylvia, I need your writing talent. Martha, you would certainly come in handy for directions. Margo, you and I could...

Mar 31, 2015 - Waves, NC

The famous Outer Banks of North Carolina, endless beaches, shipwrecks galore, the birthplace of aviation with Wilbur and Orville's first flight. We trekked the 250 miles north through the back roads of North Carolina finally catching US-64 East over the Albemarle Sound and out to the Outer Banks. There we turn South on NC-12 heading for the village of Waves. To get there, we cross the Outer Banks National Seashore where we're driving amid the sand dunes and carefully driving around the crews rebuilding the bridge that was washed out. Being...

2015-2016

Mar 29, 2015 - Wilmington, NC

We left Jacksonville yesterday the 28th. We spent the night in New Green Acres Campground in Walterboro, SC, 183 miles from Pecan Park. From there we continued on to Wilmington, NC. Why Wilmington? Because we've never been there, or course. That and the fact the only other place for a stop would be Myrtle Beach and neither of us especially wanted to go there this time. So let's continue on from Walterboro, another 245 miles to Wilmington and locate the aptly named Wilmington North Carolina KOA. This KOA was nice. It seemed a cut above the...

2015-2016

Mar 16, 2015 - Headed to Charleston

Up around 7:30, stopped at McDonald's for breakfast. Original plan called for stopping in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach then stopping at Fort Fisher Historical Site before catching the 10:15 ferry to Southport. Construction in Carolina Beach so I missed the place to turn, did stop in Kure Beach and walked out on the pier but Fort Fisher Historical Site wasn't opened yet. So I was able to catch the 9:30 ferry instead. Had never been to Myrtle Beach so stop in what I assumed was the main tourist area w/a Ferris wheel, pier, and a multitude of...
