May 25, 2013 - Tuckaseegee River

Saturday morning, we had breakfast and headed out for our first day of paddling. Our destination was Tuckaseegee Outfitters in Whittier, just west of Sylva and Dillsboro. The Tuckaseegee is a little easier than the Nantahala, so this would be a good warm-up for our paddling tomorrow. Upon arriving, we changed into appropriate clothing, applied sunscreen, and got ready for our trip. After receiving our equipment and brief safety overview, we piled into the vans and headed to our put-in near Dillsboro under the US-441/US-23 bridge. We had...

Jun 3, 2011 - Whittier, NC

We moved a whole 17 miles down the mountain to the Tuckaseegee River RV Resort, located, you guessed it, right next to the Tuckaseegee River. New campground with young trees, but quite nice with a lovely walkway down along the river. We were here for 2 weeks while exploring the area. One of the touristy things you can do here is take one of several rides on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad which passed by across the road from us. Friendly workers, too! It was fun to watch the train pass by and see all the tourists waving at us. Those were...

Jul 9, 2009 - Unto These Hills

Sammy: Today was great!!! We started off our day by going to the Huddle House for breakfast. I got big waffle with strawberries and whipped cream on top. It was delicious!!! Then, I relaxed at the house for a little while before I did a little shopping with Grandmommie. We went to the post office first and picked up Grandmommie and Granddaddy's mail. Then, we went to the Qualla Arts center. We looked around a little and I found a really cute, beaded ring that was only TWO dollars!!! After that, we went back to the Oconaluftee Indian Village...

Jul 8, 2009 - Visiting Great-Granddaddy

Sammy: Today was sooo much fun!!! For breakfast, I made my self some cheese toast. Then, we all went to visit my Great-Granddaddy at his nursing home. He's 100 years old!!! He can't hear or see well at all, but we still had a lot of fun. We went to the nursing home around noon so we could eat lunch with him. The lunch was very good. I got a roll, applesauce, and lemonade to start. That was yummuy. Then, I got a ham and cheese baked potatoe for lunch. For a little dessert, I got a scoop of strawberry ice cream. After lunch, we went back to...

Jul 7, 2009 - The Indian Village

Sammy: Today, Grandmommie, Ryan, and I went to the Indian Village. Granddaddy didn't go because he wasn't feeling that great. At the Indian Village, a bunch of Cherokee Indians have set up different little huts where they make something that the Cherokee actually made a long time ago. It is very interesting. Before you go around to these huts, there is a reenactment you can watch. The first part is a Cherokee man talking about the ceremonies the Cherokee used to put on. The second part was a war reenactment. It was very real-looking. My...

Jul 6, 2009 - Mt. Mitchell

Sammy: Today was a long, tiring, fun day!!! We had to get up super early. 7:00 AM!!! Then, we headed off to the Penland School of the Arts. It's an all adult school that teaches pottery, metalwork, letterpressing, drawing, and much, much more. I learned sooo much there. We poked our heads in a some of the classes to see what they were like. My favorite part was seeing the letterpressing. Grandmommie and Granddaddy's friend, Jerry, showed us around. He told us that letterpressing is how they used to print newspappers and books. They had to...

Jul 5, 2009 - Monopoly

Sammy: Today was just kind of a relaxing day. It was raining for most of the day so there wasn't much we could do. We had some of Granddaddy's awesome homemade, blueberry pancakes for breakfast. For the rest of the day, I laid on the hammock and read, played my DS, and played Monopoly. The Monopoly game was very fun and we finally got a winner!!! Unfortunately, I didn't win, but I did come in 2nd place!!! It was a very long game and it was Granddaddy and I in the final round. I had hardly any money and he had more than the bank did. I kind...

Jul 4, 2009 - The 4th of July

Sammy: Today we had a hodgepodge breakfast. I tried to make myself some french toast sticks, but apparently, Grandmommie and Granddaddy's microwave isn't the same as the one I have at home and my french toast sticks got burnt. So, instead I made some raisin toast. A little while later, we went to watch some Indians compete in a dance contest. The costumes were very bright and the dancing was very unique!!! Ryan and I also got some ice cream at a stand there. After that, we went back to Grandmommie and Granddaddy's house, "chillaxed", and...

Jul 3, 2009 - Gem Mining and Nick and Nate's

Sammy: Today we started out our day by having some toast with another one of Granddaddy's jelly concoctions. We also had some turkey bacon. Afterwards, we went to Mason Mountain Mining to do a little gem mining. This activity is always one of my favorites. Ryan and I found sooo many gems, little and big. Grandmommie also mined with us. Granddaddy took pictures while we mined. We went through two huge buckets of dirt and gems!!! When we were satisfied with our loot, we headed over to Nick and Nate's Pizza. Every time we go to North Carolina...

Sammy: Today Granddaddy made us some of his homemade pancakes!!! YUM!!! Then, Grandmommie took us grocery shopping to pick out food we wanted to eat while we were staying in North Carolina. When we got back, we put our bathing suits on and went to the river in Cherokee with Granddaddy. I had known that the river was going to be chilly since we had gone there many times before, brememberdn't remeber it being this cold!!! It was freezing!!! My legs even started to get numb!!! Luckily the water wasn't too deep or too cold to still have some...
