Apr 25, 2017 - Ocean Waves Campground and surrounds

{click on thumbnail pictures to enlarge} Tuesday 4/25/17 Last night was a wild night - as in wild weather, not wild me. It had been a windy and somewhat rainy day yesterday but around 3 am the storm really hit. Heavy heavy rain and steady wind of 35mph straight out of the east. Frequent, as in all the time for two hours, gusts in excess of 50 mph. I am oriented N/S so the winds were hitting me broadside with only one RV between me and the beach and dunes. With the hydraulic jacks down, the rig was steady but the slides were being tested as...

Apr 21, 2017 - Journey from Oak Island to Waves, NC (OBX)

So this morning, I left Oak Island to head to Ocean Waves Campground in Waves, NC. Ocean Waves will be my 'home' for about 5 weeks. The route choice were an approximately 280 mile overland drive north to cross over to the OBX at Manteo and then back south to Waves NC or drive to Cedar Island NC, catch the ferry to Ocracoke Islands, drive 15 miles to the north end of Ocracoke and catch another ferry to Hatteras Island and drive 30 miles north to Waves, a total drive of approximately 150 miles. Either land portion of the drive are fairly...

May 14, 2016 - Ocean Waves CG continued - May 13th to May 27th

May 13th finished off with a cool front/rain moving through and a great rainbow display over the beach. Saturday followed with bright blue skies, low humidity and 80 degree temps. We decided to ride south past Avon to a point where the road is right next to Pamlico Sound to watch the kite surfers. On the way we discovered that surf fishing affects all income levels as we passed a Rolls Royce decked out with a surf rod carrier on the front and with beach tires. Who knew? It was a nice afternoon watching the kite surfers. It was only a...

Apr 27, 2016 - Hatteras Island, NC: Ferry

After a great night's sleep, we headed to the north side ferry terminal where we boarded the 10:30 am ferry to Hatteras Island. It is a shorter ferry ride of only 1 hour and it was an equally beautiful day/ride. We disembarked in the town of Hatteras and drove the 30 miles or so to our OBX destination - Ocean Waves Campground in Waves, NC. The cg is a full service, full hookup ocean front campground and our sites are about 12 off the barrier dune. We will be here for 30 days. It is pre season and many businesses will open May 1st. Waves is...

2016 Summer Trip

Apr 27, 2016 - Waves, NC: Ocean Waves CG- Apr 27th to May 13th

Will be at this cg for the next 30 days. Arrived on Weds, April 27th. Spent a couple of days looking around a bit (it's very early in the season and not everything is up and running yet). First few days were quite windy but clear and there were lots and lots of kite boarders out on the Pamlico Sound. We ate at a restaurant that also houses kite and equipment rentals & sales and a school for learning to kiteboard. It was an interesting place. Really big kites and they get up to 30-35 mph on their boards. I'd guess they sleep well at...

2016 Summer Trip

Jun 27, 2014 - The Outer Banks

We had the quietest night here we've experienced in a campground in a long time, possibly never before; so we hated to leave but we will be back. We were in no rush because we didn't have far to go and the campground in the Outer Banks made it very clear they didn't want to see us before 1 o'clock; early arrival would be penalized at the rate of $5.00 / hour. I always find this amusing and slightly confusing; check-out is 11:00 a.m. but can't check in until 1 o'clock......it's not like they have to clean the room and make the beds........oh...

Summer 2014 & Beyond

Apr 27, 2014 - Outer Banks NC

We continued east to the North Carolina Outer Banks. Spring definitely has not arrived here – it was cold with very high winds. That made the drive over the tall bridges very unnerving, but the master driver kept the Cat Nap Inn on the road and out of the bays and sounds. The Outer Banks is all about lighthouses, seafood, and shipwrecks. We visited the Bodie Lighthouse, now inland in the middle, the Hatteras Lighthouse at the point, and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse at the northern shore. We also visited the Graveyard of the Atlantic...

Oct 31, 2013 - The Outerbanks

Today we wrap up a week at Ocean Wave Campground in Waves, NC. It has been a good week. The campground is excellent with the best wifi that we have found and full hookups. Are site is just a dune away from the ocean and a seemingly endless beach with only a few folks on it. Waves is on Hatteras Island on the outer banks. Getting there took us through Kitty Hawk, Nagshead, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Most of route 12 is a two lane highway with sand dunes on the eastern edge. On Wednesday we took a day trip south to Okracoke....

Apr 9, 2011 - Corolla Wild Horses/Kitty Hawk

Last night the wind really picked up and kept the camper rock-in all night long. We also had some rain. Woke up this morning to 47 degrees and a 30 mph cold wind. It was gloomy and blustery all day, but we didn't let that stop us. We headed out to Corolla, NC, which is about 60 miles north on the outer banks. We took a guided tour in a 4x4 Suburban way up the beach to see the wild horses. The pics will speak for themselves. The amazing part of the trip was that there are about 100 homes way up the beach with the only access by way of the...

Apr 8, 2011 - Ocracoke Island

Today we left early and headed south to Ocracoke Island at the southern end of Hatteras. We had to take a ferry to get to the island. That was an experience putting the truck and camper on that. The island was really great with some "wild" Ocracoke ponies, which unfortunately have been corralled sine 1957 and a really neat lighthouse. There is a grave there of four British sailors who's bodies washed ashore after a German U-boat torpedoed their ship. There bodies were the only ones recovered. On the way back we stopped at Cape Hatteras...

Jan 12, 2011 - The last Night in Rodanthe

We had a great visit with Judy & Bobby Lucas (from Harpers Ferry area and now living in Kill Devil Hills). It was a nice to see them and another great lunch. Afterwards we checked out the Light House at Bodie Island. The Bodie Lighthouse is about 110 years old and is having its 1st renovation since it was constructed. Renovations started in October 2009 and should be done in 2012. Also found the house (called Serendipity but better known as the Inn at Rodanthe) that was used in the Nights in Rodanthe book by Nicolas Sparks and later a...

Jan 11, 2011 - Brunch on Tuesday

After arriving @ "Camp Hatteras RV Resort" in Waves, NC we have been keeping busy with some local sight seeing. No traffic here this time of year so the flow is good. Ed said he wasn't hungry enough for breakfast, so he suggested we have a "brunch". We found a nice local restaurant serving great breakfasts before 11:30 - We walked in at 11:15 and had our brunch. The restaurant also had numerous gifts & nicknacks at after season prices, which is Cindy's passion finding sales. Went to the end of the Cape and asked some questions about the...
