The climbing started immediately as we moved from foothills into the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. Beautiful country, but the fast downhills were quickly replaced by even longer uphill climbs for 85 miles. It wasn't as hot, but the challenging terrain made for a long day. Highlights for the day appeared early in the morning as we discovered Lake Oconee(pronounced A-ko-ee) and rode along the shoreline to its source, the Oconee River, which was the site of the 1996 Centinental Olympics Whitewater Sports. POINTS OF INTEREST Day 1: This morning we drove up Sky Valley Mountain to check out a few vista lookouts. We could see our RV Park from one of the lookouts. Then after visiting the Clayton Visitor Center we drove to Tallulah Gorge State Park, Tallulah, Ga. This is one of the oldest geological features in North America. Over thousands of years, the Tallulah River has eroded hard, quartzite rock into a 1,000 foot deep chasm more than 2 miles long. The river drops almost 600 feet in elevation.
