Jun 9, 2015 - Four Paws Kingdom

If you haven't been following our spring trip you may be confused on where our dog Izzy has been. When we agreed to housesit last year for Anne and Graeme in Asheville we didn't have a dog. Our friends Roger and Dianne Norris in Retama graciously agreed to watch her while we did that as Anne an Graeme had two cats and we weren't sure if they would get along. It couldn't have worked out better. Roger and Dianne had planned a trip to the RV-Dreams Reunion Rally just about 30 miles south of Asheville where we were staying which turned out to...

Jun 1, 2009 - Monday June 1 – Jim goes fishing

Jim spent the day fishing. He caught a total of 8 – none very big but it was a lot of fun. I even caught a few shots of him reeling in a little flopper. It was a beautiful, quiet day but very hot & humid. We cooked steaks and potatoes on the grill and toasted some marshmallows. A highlight was a pair of mallard ducks that wandered right by our campsite.

Mills Spring 2009

May 18, 2009 - Mon. & Tues. May 18 & 19 – Papillon National Agility

What a thrill to see so many paps all in one place. Most of them ran very well also. Spice finished her Novice FAST title with a 4th place. Our only Q but we did have a great time. Jet was better than he has been but I still do not have full attention. Felicia ran Miley and Kashea. Tami got another QQ with Jonas so he is about 1/3 of the way to his MACH. Peyton moved up to Ex in both classes at only 17 months of age. Grandma is so proud. Thanks to Linda Walters for coming with Tami even though Lily is on the injured list for awhile Eli is...

Mills Spring 2009

May 12, 2009 - Sunday May 3 – Tuesday May 12 – Four Paws Kingdom

Days were filled with agility training, rally training, rain, naps, swimming in the pond, splashing in the creek and just fun for the dogs (and me). Jet even was sort of retrieving toys from the pond and swimming a little. Spice just ran around the edge of the pond and tried to catch fish. Cricket ran around and barked and tried to keep her feet dry. Cody sat in the shade of the gazebo and waited for the others to come to their senses and get out of the water. We also made another trip to Chimney Rock to try out another trail. This one led...

Mills Spring 2009

May 7, 2009 - On the road again

We've enjoyed a couple of lazy days, reading/napping when it rains, walking the dogs when it clears. Today Charlie managed a nice long bike ride, and we took the beagles back to Linus Creek and the hike, then bath time in the doggy bathhouse! Two ticks each! Laundry, cleaning, doing what we can for an early departure tomorrow. Not sure where we'll stop in between, but we have a reservation now for PetitJean State Park in Arkansas for 5/10. More pictures later.

May 5, 2009 - A Little Rain, a Little Sunshine

Although some rough weather has been around us, it’s missed Rutherfordton except for a few cooling showers. The day started out a little wet, but we still made it out for a walk, but it’s been a reading/computer kind of day. We stopped by to visit Schroeder and Lucy, the Corgis who run the place. Charlie tried making pizza in the oven; he had trouble figuring out the browning too, until we took it off the rack so it didn’t rotate. That may be the key for bread too.

May 4, 2009 - Manicures, Biking & Baking

Today Carol, who held the grooming seminar, taught us how trim Riley and Megan’s nails. Sweet little Riley tried to bite everyone involved. We’re going to get a “nose mitten” (muzzle). Anyway, now we know the how, we just need to keep the courage to do it. Later while the dogs napped we rode our bikes for an hour on the “Thermal Belt Rail Trail”, a reclaimed railroad track now covered with crushed gravel for a good bike ride. The trail is 8 miles long, but we didn’t ride all of it. Helen had to get comfortable with riding on rock and it...

May 3, 2009 - Linus Creek Redux!

Another beautiful day with highs in the 70’s. After yesterday’s fun, even the dogs slept late! On the morning walk, Riley remembered the way to Linus’ Creek, which readers of last year’s blog may remember. He headed straight for the mud, while Megan doesn’t seem to like the feel of squishy red clay. Then Riley led us all up the hiking trail. Relaxing later by the dog swimming hole, they played with another schnauzer, this one a blind but friendly dog.

May 2, 2009 - Saturday, May 2, Dog Festival

Log on to www.fourpawskingdom.com and click on the dog daze to see photos of Cricket, Jet and all the other dogs. Today was the “1st Annual Four Paws Kingdom Dog Festival”. At the agility demo, Cricket and Jet showed their skills along with Brigit’s two Corgis (Lucy and Schroeder) as lots of dogs and their owners watched. One little schnauzer cheered the competitors with a constant bark that sounded like a squeaky toy. Then all the dogs got to try out a simple course under our supervision. Next we introduced the group to Rally and helped...

Mills Spring 2009

May 2, 2009 - Dog Festival

Yesterday’s drive was a lot easier, since we knew from last year just how narrow and winding the road would be to Four Paws. It’s spring in the Blue Ridge foothills, very green, very comfortable temperatures, a great time to be here. Be forewarned, though; the next few entries will be mostly “all dogs, all the time!” There are every size and breed of dog, from a tiny, 19 year old dachshund named Tinker to a hulking but nice Bernese Mountain Dog, as well as mutts of all sizes. Some campers stay in cabins or rent RVs on site; others are in...

May 1, 2009 - On the Road to NC

Up and on the road by 9:15! This has been a great kick-off to the trip, fun with friends, a great campground, perfect weather, and no mechanical issues. Of course, we know all that won’t last! We’re headed to Four Paws Kingdom Campground in Rutherfordton, NC, where dogs reign and people pick up the poop and pay the bills.
