Apr 11, 2015 - Raven Rock Wildflower Hike

This past Saturday, I headed to Raven Rock State Park for a nice wildflower hike. I’ve visited Raven Rock many times, but this would be the first time in the spring. Although the pollen was out in force, the weather was otherwise perfect for a spring hike. I started off from the visitor center hiking down Campbell Creek Loop Trail. In about a half-mile, I came to the bridge over the creek and stopped for a moment to enjoy the beautiful flowering dogwoods along the creek. Across the bridge, I turned right to follow the loop in the...

Nov 9, 2013 - Rod's Raven Rock Hike

Today was Rod Broadbelt’s annual hike in Raven Rock State Park. The hike started at 8, but it’s over an hour drive to the park so I left at 630 and got to the park a few minutes before opening. The rangers had just opened the gate when I arrived and I followed the line of cars in to the old parking lot. All or nearly all of the early arrivals were for Rod’s hike. After everyone signed in and Rod gave a quick overview of the planned hike, we took off on the Campbell Creek Loop Trail. It was very cold when we started out and I was bundled up...

Nov 10, 2012 - Rod's Raven Rock Hike

This morning I went with Rod Broadbelt to hike at Raven Rock State Park. I was a little late arriving at the park due to construction on NC-55 driving down there, so as soon as I arrived, we headed out on the Campbell Creek Loop Trail. Starting the hike, I was at the back of the group, since I arrived late and as we reached the footbridge about half a mile in, the people ahead of me turned left, so I followed. In the back of my mind, I thought that Rod usually goes the other way, but continued following. We went about 2 miles through the...

We continued on and took the Lanier Falls Trail down to the falls and then back and finished up the loop. Back at the parking lot, we took the Raven Rock Loop Trail to Northington Ferry Trail and hiked to the end for another view of the river, then back and took the Fish Traps Trail down and back (fourth river view). Then, we got back on the Raven Rock Loop and continued down to the rock...

Oct 30, 2011 - Day Hike at Raven Rock

Yesterday, Sandy and I spent the day at Raven Rock State Park. We first hiked along the Campbell Creek Loop Trail, following Campbell Creek to Cape Fear River. We took the short Lanier Falls Trail to the "falls" and stopped for some pictures, then continued back along the Campbell Creek Loop Trail back to the Visitor Center. Then we hiked the Raven Rock Loop Trail, and took a detour along the Fish Traps Trail. At the Fish Traps, we climbed out onto the rocks for a great view up and down the Cape Fear River. Then back to the Raven Rock Loop...

May 29, 2011 - Day Hike at Raven Rock

We did a day hike at Raven Rock State Park today. It was a fun hike, despite the humidity. We walked the Campbell Creek Loop Trail along the Campbell Creek up to the Cape Fear River, then followed the trail to Lanier Falls and stopped to look at the falls. We finished up the trail and stopped for lunch at the visitor center. After lunch, we hike the Raven Rock Loop trail to the overlook and Raven Rock then headed back to the parking lot. Although not as hot as the past couple days, it was very humid. I will upload pictures and trail map...
