May 25, 2015 - Toms Spring & Shuck Ridge Creek Waterfalls

Monday morning, we had breakfast at the hotel and then packed up our stuff and checked out. We headed back to Pisgah Forest one more time. On FSR-475, we continued past Cove Creek Group Camp and parked at the trailhead for Toms Spring Falls. There are a number of primitive camping sites along FSR 137, so the parking lot was almost full. After getting our stuff together, we hiked across Davidson River on the bridge and turned right on FSR 5046. It was just a short ways to Toms Spring Falls. First, we got some pictures from the road, then...

May 24, 2015 - Brevard Area Waterfalls

Sunday morning, we woke up and had breakfast at the hotel. Once we were ready, we headed to the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery, stopping at Subway to pick up lunch on the way. I was worried that the parking area would be full, but fortunately it wasn’t too crowded here. We started hiking Cat Gap Loop Trail (#120) for about a mile or so to our first waterfall of the day – Waterfall on Cedar Rock Creek. The waterfall was very scenic and the mountain laurel was blooming all around the falls. Sandy and I spent some time...

May 23, 2015 - Birthday Waterfalls

This is the last time for a few years that my birthday falls on Memorial Day Weekend, so Sandy and I headed out to the mountains for the long weekend to get some waterfalls. We left Friday night and drove out to the Brevard area. It turns out there was a festival in Brevard over the holiday weekend, so everything in the area was packed. We finally found a spot along Cathey’s Creek Road to spend the night. Saturday morning, we woke up and headed into Brevard for breakfast and then into the National Forest along US-276. In about 10 miles, we...

Oct 27, 2014 - Fall comes to the mountains

We are down to our last day in the mountains of western NC. Today we will be packing and securing everything for our trip back to Florida. We will stretch it to a week long trip, making several stops for 2 or 3 nights each. We are scheduled to arrive at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, FL on Nov 5. We plan to stay there for four months through the winter. The attached photo is one of many that Karen has taken as the leaves change and the weather gets cooler and drier. The nights have been in the 32-47 degree range. Days in the mid...

Oct 22, 2014 - Back to Brevard

Wednesday morning, we woke up early, had breakfast at the hotel and checked out. We would be meeting Justine, Bill, and Grace in Brevard, but since they were driving from Raleigh, we had a little time to kill. So we headed to Gorges State Park for a quick hike along Horsepasture River. We had been to the waterfalls along here many times, but never during fall foliage, so this would be a great spot to wait for our friends to join us. We hiked the moderate Rainbow Falls Trail (#499) into Pisgah National Forest for about 1.5 miles to the...

Oct 18, 2014 - Pisgah Forest Waterfalls

For Fall Foliage this year, Sandy and I took a whole week to head out to western North Carolina and go on an epic waterfall hunting adventure. We left very early in the morning on Saturday and made our way west, arriving in Pisgah Forest around 10. We made a quick stop at Subway to get our lunches for the next two days and then headed into Pisgah National Forest. From US-276, we turned onto Forest Service Road 475 and drove past the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and parked at the trailhead for Daniel Ridge Loop Trail (#105). It was a...

Aug 31, 2014 - New home!

Well we retired our Bounder motorhome and moved into our new home, a Bighorn fifth wheel, (Rosie). Lots more space, more comfortable and it feels more like a home. We also traded in the Bounder on my new truck, Tillie2. Shes a Ram 3500 Cummins diesel dually. Very comfortable, rides like a car, strong enough to pull the fiver. We were missing the Bounder at first. She served us well. Never a problem. Just needed more space now that we are committed to staying fulltime. We went into Hendersonville on Friday for the North Carolina Apple...

Jul 28, 2014 - Great Smoky Mtns Natl Park

We had a full day of sightseeing yesterday. We visited Cade's Cove Loop, Great Smoky Mtns Natl Park, Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC. We could not, of course, do a thorough visit of any of them. But we did not intend on visiting them all in the same day. We set out for Cade's Cove, drove thru and found ourselves winding thru the Great Smoky Mountains. On our way home we drove thru Gatlinburg, TN, which is just a tourist trap. We didn't stop except in traffic. We did stop however in Cherokee, NC for dinner. Again, not real impressed. The...

Jul 8, 2014 - We're in heaven!

We arrived today at Cascade Lake Campground in Pisgah Forest. Beautiful place. So different than the places we have volunteered at so far. Check the photo that I uploaded. We attended a weekly meeting of volunteers and we were given the next two days off to settle in. Is this a great life or what?
