Nov 21, 2014 - Half way there

Wanda Pritchett and her husband Morris have been mainstays along the waterway for decades. Their Alligator River marina is remote and serves also as a gas station/convenience store for the occasional road traffic. We would see them often in the Bahamas aboard their trawler "Miss Wanda". Today, Morris is deceased and their son helps out on the dock. They would like to sell the marina and the boat, but have few takers. Meanwhile they continue to plug along and maintain the fine service of years past. Up early Thursday morning we cleared the...

Oct 25, 2012 - Day Twenty Ocracoke, NC to Morehead City, NC

Left this am at 10:00 under sunny skies and temp 82. Hottest day yet. Ocracoke is a small island only accessible via two ferries. We spent the entire day on this lazy island shopping, beach walking and touring lighthouse and wild ponies. This town centers around its harbor and fishing. We saw everything there is to see in a few hours. Last night we had fried fish and shrimp at Howard's Pub and today had green tomato BLT at The Flying Melon. Lots of browsing through shops. Lots of it cheap stuff but several displaying local talent....

It was a crazy day yesterday. We even had sailboats trying to pass everyone! Not sure why since we all ended up at the same anchorage by the end of the day. We stay at Mile Hammock Bay which was a cutout area that the military made to do practice. They still use it on occasion but let boaters anchor there most of the time. We...

Wish they would have more dryers than washers. Everyone gets...

Dec 5, 2009 - Bound for Beaufort

As with previous transits, the anchoring out is fine for awhile, but soon it is time to set foot on dry land and not worry about a dragging anchor thru the nite. It is also the opportunity to correct the little maintenance issues that crop up and are too much trouble to work on underway. In this case, we developed a leak in the bathroom sink that proved to be a broken pipe fitting at the plug. Also the LP line to the gas stove began showing a red light indicating a drop in pressure. Each has resulted in our discontinuing use, needless to...

Oct 15, 2009 - North Carolina

Monday 10/12 Sunny in the morning, clouds and rain afternoon and evening. This area is part of the Crystal Coast. We drove across Emerald Isle, and then stopped in Beaufort. They have a historic district with homes 100 - 200 years old. Most of them have been restored and people live in them. There is also a cemetery dating back to the 1700's. Very interesting. Tuesday 10/13 Sunny all day!! Drove to Harker Island and stopped at the Cape Lookout Visitor Center. Walked around the trails along Core Sound and had a picnic lunch looking out at...

Nov 8, 2008 - To Go Offshore or Not?

Current Location: Morehead City, NC Weather - Hi 70's, lo 60, sunny and breezy, but we're keeping abreast of the hurricane news Another entry so fast? Well, it may be awhile before we get internet again, so I thought I would do the two at once. We made it to Morehead City (sister city to Beaufort - and a busy place) without too much trouble, in spite of the many markers, choices of channels/directions and bridges. We anchored out last night across from the town and it was a beautiful sight to see it all lit up. Today we decided to splurge...

Oct 20, 2008 - North Carolina and the Crystal Coast

Reading the newspapers again, and found this wonderful quote in the venerable Washington Post: “With the stock market jumping around like a rodeo bronc and consumer confidence shot, I’ve decided we need an Insecurities and Exchange Commission.” Jim, especially liked the allusion! We had our last meal at the crab shack. It’s really called Margie and Ray’s and by now, the waitresses and the current owner Dana all know us. This time we got to talking about crabs, and learned new words: sooks are female crabs, as in she-crab soup. But we were...

Oct 29, 2007 - Blackbeard, the pirate

We slept in! The wind was so strong last night, we stayed in a cabin at a KOA on the Outer Banks - near Hatteras. We closed the curtains...and definately missed the sunrise. Had a hearty breakfast at a little shack across from the campground, and then hit the road. The island (Pea Island) is absolutely a sliver of land. You have the Atlantic on 1 side, and Palmico Sound on the other. Nothing but stubby trees and sand. Parts of the island are much more developed than we were expecting - lots and lots of beach homes. They are built up - the...
