Sep 20, 2016 - Marion Wasn't Bad...Enough Wine Will Improve Anything

And we're off.... The last week has been a real test of endurance. Every time I leave the RV for a time, I promise myself I will not let things wait until the last minute, that I will get everything cleaned and sorted and packed before we leave. Right now if you ask me to find my b--t I'd have to stop and think. And probably ask Larry,"Have you seen my b--t?" And he would probably say, "Yes, Honey. But that's Ok. I've gotten older too." But nonetheless, we are on our way and I will find where I slung everything. Thank you to all our great...

Jun 19, 2013 - A River Runs Through It--Marion, NC

Near the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway is McDowell County, North Carolina; an area steeped in history, beauty and trout. At one end of the county is Old Fort, a great stop if you are a railroad enthusiast. Here you will find the Old Fort Depot and Railroad Museum. In the days of old, Old Fort wanted to attract more tourists. They worked with the government and the railroad to build a 60 foot geyser and hotel resort. Unfortunately the hotel burned down when a spark from the passing train ignited the wooden structure. The hotel was...

Apr 29, 2013 - Blue Ridge Parkway and ACRE rally

Saturday April 20, Virginia ---Saturday morning we got back on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke. Very nice clear day and the scenery was great. We stayed in Boone, NC at a KOA that had not yet opened for the season so they gave us a site for $20. The campground elevation was about 3600’ and the temperature dropped down into the 20’s at night. Boone has a memorial garden honoring Daniel Boone and is also home to the Appellation State University. They were having some kind of musical competition around town. We saw guitar players on Main St....

Apr 27, 2013 - Time to Hitch Up

Escapee ACRE is a combination of learning, fun, and meeting new friends. We spent the days at RV seminars on weight reduction (for the RV's), tire safety, travel safety, photographic techniques, and estate planning and tax tips for RV'ers. The nights were reserved for food and fun. We got our fill of BBQ and music. This area is famous for country and blue grass musicians. We enjoyed the performances of Tom Sparks' Appalachian Music and Bernie Burleson's Tru Blu Bluegrass Band. Before dinner every evening, there was a social hour with snacks...

Apr 22, 2013 - Escapees All Chapter Rally East

Yesterday was a down day. Didn't do anything but read and nap in the warm spring sun. We headed off to Marion, NC today to attend the Escapee All Chapters Rally East at the Tom Johnson Camping Center. We drove through the Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge area of North Carolina. Spring has arrived in the mountains as many of the trees like dogwood and red bud are budding out, but it's still cold as we have been running the heater for the last several days. We stopped in Waynesville, NC for lunch. Sue was following a blogger...

Aug 8, 2011 - Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine

Early this morning, around 7:30, we watched the activity begin. This is a serious gold prospecting group of people! The pickup trucks started going by towing the gold mining equipment (high bankers) and people started walking toward the panning shed carrying their supplies and buckets of dirt. Others started panning their buckets of dirt at their camp site There’s also a huge crane at the end of the property digging out the dirt. That dirt is sold by the bucket full and there’s a panning shed where people can buy the dirt and pan in the...

Aug 7, 2011 - Clemmons to Marion, NC

Most travel days are fairly routine but every new campground is a new adventure and today was no exception. We drove about 110 miles, all of it interstate except the last 6 miles. We exited I-40 to 221 South and went 6 miles to the Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine and Camp. They had a big sign with an arrow so we turned on to a narrow dirt road. As we turned off the main road we didn’t realize the narrow dirt road was going down a steep ridgeside. The trees were so thick we couldn’t see what was around the corner. As the big behemoth, The...

Apr 28, 2011 - Tom Johnson Camping Center

We arrived at the Tom Johnson Camping Center in Marion, NC late yesterday afternoon. The weather on the trip from Virginia was rainy and overcast. Last night we were under a tornado watch until 0200 on 4/28. As you are probably seeing on the news, tornadoes have torn up Mississippi and Alabama. We were fortunate that there was only rain and thunderstorms last night, although someone said a tornado siren went off about 0400 this morning. I must have slept through it because I never heard it. We wnet to a geocaching talk today. Geocaching is...

This morning we left after spending a wonderful week visiting with our son and girlfriend Sarah in Palm Coast, FL. When we left we had 99,547 miles on our motorhome. Well in Spartanburg, SC at 4:18pm we turned over the first of many 100,000 miles. Other than that it was an uneventful day of driving.

Apr 21, 2011 - Marion, NC

Thu, 21 Apr: Where to go, where to go??? We pondered that question following our Camp Freightliner class earlier in the week. Bob noted that there is an Escapees Rally at Marion, NC next week, so we thought it might be fun to attend that. We contacted the rallymaster who not only invited us to join them but also advised that we could come early and get the rally rate. We jumped at the chance and headed to Marion this morning. Marion is almost due north of Gaffney as the crow flies, but there seem to be some mountains inconveniently in the...
