Yesterday was a complete washout. It rained all day and night so we didn’t leave the campground. This morning started out with some fog before the sun broke through later in the morning. We decided to head up to Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Before leaving Marion, we took a trip back in time when we went to the gas station to fill up. It was weird in that it was a full service station. The attendant pumped the gas and another washed both the windshield and the back window. It was an Exxon station and the gas didn’t really...

Sep 15, 2008 - Grandpa Mountain

Well, Sandy and Hogan are finally feeling better. Sandy's back is back to its normal abnormal and Hogan's , uh, you know, is almost back to normal. Today we drove down (and up, up, up) to Grandfather Mountain. These pictures were mostly taken from the Swinging Bridge at the top. The bridge is over one mile above sea level and the views are beautiful. The mountain itself is called Grandfather because if you look at it from a distance it looks like an old man lying on his back. Sandy didn't want to go across the bridge because it was too far...

Nov 1, 2007 - Independence, VA to Linville, NC

(Ron Writing) We had a good Internet connection in the town of Independence, VA so we stayed awhile this morning to get some work done on the computer. At about 11 AM we left there driving south on H-21/221 to Twin Oaks, NC then H-21 to Sparta, NC. From there we drove south on H-18 to the tiny town of Laurel Springs, NC. The only buildings in Laurel Springs are a fire station and a post office. On Monday we arranged to have mail sent to that post office, it arrived yesterday and we picked it up today.
