May 16, 2015 - Dirty Dancing in Lake Lure

Asheville is known for it's beautiful scenery with nearby parkways, rivers and lakes. One of the more famous lakes is Lake Lure just 45 minutes away- best know for the film location of "Dirty Dancing". Although the movie setting is a resort in the Catskill Mountains, the movie was actually filmed in Lake Lure, North Carolina. Filming started in September 1986, and since many of the resorts in the Catskills had been shut down by then, the production team chose Lake Lake Lure, along with The Mountain Lake Hotel near Roanoke, Virginia, for...

Aug 15, 2012 - Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock is a rock formation that looks like a chimney growing out of the side of the mountain. To reach the top of the chimney, one can choose to walk the stairs the 27 stories or take an elevator which is built into the mountain. Aug 10, 2012 - Lake Lure and the Western Carolina Mountains

Hello from Lake Lure, NC.!!!!!! We drove up on Tuesday and plan on staying until the 10th of Sept. During that time we will be exploring several attractions including the Biltmore House, Mount Mitchell (highest point in Eastern US), Chimney Rock, Linville Gorge and Caverns, and drive a little of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The drive up was relatively uneventful with the exception of a two mile stretch of hair-pin turns. Driving a 60’ vehicle (bus and car) around those turns is somewhat nerve racking (Stephanie did not talk at all), and...

Jul 18, 2008 - At Lake Lure

Pam and I drove Pam's mom and dad from Carterville, Illinois, to Lake Lure, North Carolina yesterday. We had very good weather and except for some delay on I-40 because of an accident in the mountains involving an 18 wheeler and some vehicles, we made good time. However, when we arrived around the Lake Lure area, we didn't really know how to get to our resort. After asking some locals, we arrived at Rumbling Bald Resort. However, again, since we were a late arrival, we had difficulty getting checked in. The people at the security gate could...
