Jan 23, 2018 - Greensboro

Even though it had rained last night it was sunny this morning and no wind. We got packed up and found our way to Biltmore Estates. It was pricey for the admission but worth every penny. We spent 4 hours touring around 50 of the over 200 rooms of the mansion. We walked the huge gardens and even though there isn’t any thing blooming now there was lots in there green houses. It was a perfect day to do this with the temp being around 65. We then went to there winery which is also included on the tour, free wine tasting and samples of lots of...

Aug 23, 2016 - Red Fox

Saw a red fox running across the road just as we left the park this morning. Headed to Greensboro, NC and the Guilford Courthouse a Revolutionary War battle pitting Lord Cornwallis against Nathaniel Green. Lord Charles Cornwallis, was born December 31, 1738, educated at Eton and Clare College in Cambridge. Unlike many wealthy youth of the time, Cornwallis elected to enter the military rather than pursue a life of leisure. He purchased a commission as an ensign but distanced himself from other officers by actively studying military science...

May 16, 2015 - Woodruff, SC to Greensboro, NC

5-16-15 On to Greensboro, NC We got things ready to go early in hopes of beating the crowds that will appear today at “The Nall" (Saturday). We said our goodbyes to our camp neighbors and were rolling by 10:22AM. We enjoyed our stay in RC paradise, but it’s time to move on. We stopped once in a rest area briefly and arrived in Greensboro, NC by 2:00PM. We traveled an easy 190 miles in just under four hours. Julie has been lobbying for shorter driving days and I confess, I’m beginning to like the pace. We camped in a place called...

Oct 1, 2014 - Hello North Carolina

We arrive about 1:00 pm about a 3 hr drive from Ashland, VA. After we got on I 95 and headed south thru Petersburg,VA the interstate was a terrible. We thought we were back in CA! When we finally made the state line to North Carolina smooth sailing! Our drive down we have been noticing the beginning of the changing of the colors. Our campsite is nice and we always seem to meet the nicest people. Our neighbor is from Pennsylvania on their way to Fort Meyers, VA. Our weather and the drive down was foggy (high) but about 2 in the afternoon the...

Jun 25, 2014 - Greensboro

The best thing about today's drive is we don't have to do it again. From Gaffney north to Charlotte, we endured rough roads, it felt like a free roller-coaster ride in places, some badly needed construction was going on in some stretches. We fueled up at Flying J before leaving SC to get the most competitive price for the region. A few rest stops gave us a break from the rough roads and Foxy appreciated the paw stretch. We decided to call it an early day in Greensboro. We don't have reservations at the Outer Banks until Friday so we have...

Summer 2014 & Beyond

Apr 17, 2013 - Knoxville To Greensboro

The physical feature on my body that I dislike the most is my nose. Now there is twice as much of it to be unhappy about. When I returned to the hotel after dinner I tripped on the curb and fell. Minor scrapes and bruising except for my nose. Apparently it made contact with the cement, the eyeglass dug into the bridge of the nose, and now I have a fat nose and a black eye. People always say to me -"drive safely" - now they will have to say "walk safely". I had breakfast with Kate and then left Knoxville for Johnson City . I had two reasons...

Jun 16, 2012 - One More Mountain Story

We delivered our beer and waited for the next adventure. Picking up in Winston-Salem, NC going to Tracy, California. It doesn't deliver until Wednesday.....it was Friday (basically a solo load) but our dispatcher set it up so we can drop it early at our yard in Stockton, CA not far away. This time we went the southern route into California, going across I-40. It's less mountainy (is that a word?)and we get better fuel mileage. It was a nice, light load of Cover Girl Make-up! We are often asked what is the most frightening experience we...

May 24, 2012 - Day trip to NC

From home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia ... Thursday, May 24, 2012 We had a busy day. Our day began at 7:30. We went to Weight Watchers to weigh in. (Yep, we're back at THAT again.) We decided not to stay for the meeting today since we had plans to go to Greensboro, NC to do a little shopping. We drove in a nice rain switching from light to drizzly most of the way to NC. We arrived just in time for lunch. We were pretty hungry since we hadn't had anything to eat yet. So of course we opted for lunch at PF Chang's. We eat there...

On the Road Again

Aug 28, 2011 - Day 48: Running from Irene

Subtitled: 10 States in 2 Days When we found a notice on the bath house door in Wompatuck State Park that informed us the campground was closing, we really knew it was time to leave! Obviously I-95 wasn't a good choice, so we looked for another route. We did use part of 95 but I-78 and I-81 brought us into North Carolina. The worse part of the drive was Friday when we came through Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey... areas that are always bad, but with all the tourists fleeing the area as well as some people leaving early to avoid...

Jun 12, 2011 - Burlington, NC - Visit our Son's family

June 2-3, 2011We left home and headed for Greensboro NC to get to an RV park so that we could visit our son and family for about a week. The trip was smooth (which is always good) and the weather hot and clear. We will be traveling between Burlington, NC and the camp as we spend time with the kids. It is about a 20 mile drive but the camp is the closest that is in the area to accommodate our rig. June 3-12, 2011This week we spent with our son and family in Burlington, NC. We had a great time as we watched our youngest grandson who is eight...

Dec 23, 2010 - Watched Tangled, Returned Rental Car, Played Games

Today Sarah's family and I watched Tangled, a highly-enjoyable Disney version of Rapunzel. Afterwards I returned my rental car (bye bye, Mercury Milan). Then Sarah and I played banana grams. We ate pizza for dinner and then proceeded upstairs to play Mad Gab and Guesstures. Also, I played some games with Reagan. What I have enjoyed from the first day I met Sarah's parents is the sense of belonging that I have felt. Even though I am not part of the family, I feel welcomed and accepted.
