Jun 11, 2018 - Day 8 - Birthdays

Today there were two firsts: Nash began his new full time job and came home enthused, and Lalena started her Summer Camp and loved it. Today was also our last day together with the kids. Robin & Cindy spent time planning for Anniversary Parties in July, then went shopping together for party supplies. Robin & Gary went grocery shopping for tonight's special dinner to celebrate Cindy's birthday (June 13th), Gary's birthday (June 16th) and Father's Day (July 17th) while we are still all together. After our shrimp cocktail and happy hour...

Jun 10, 2018 - Day 7 - Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC

An awesome day as we visited the Biltmore House, Flower Gardens and Winery in Asheville, NC. Our daughter, Robin, went with us, which we enjoyed. To tour the Biltmore House, we did the self guided audio tour which took us about 2 hours to see all three floors (main floor, living quarters (3rd floor) and the basement - where the staff lived and the family's recreation was (pool, bowling alley, gym, etc.). After touring the House, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the adjoining public Cafe, in which we also were able to cool down from the heat!...

Jun 9, 2018 - Day 6 - Celebration

A relaxing day at Cindy & Craig's. Nash's father, Kevin, returned to Elk Lake Lodge in North Hudson, NY (7 AM flight out of Asheville). Craig & Cindy went to the community pool for 2 hours with Lalena - she just loves swimming in the pool! Gary sat in the sun on the patio, Robin finished a book and Jean worked on research for the Lewis Veterans' Park. Cindy & Craig took us all out for pizza at Blue Ridge Pizza Company in Etowah, NC (where she works 4 days/week) to celebrate Nash's & girlfriend Ashley's graduation from West Henderson High...

Jun 8, 2018 - Day 5 - School

Today was a lot of celebrations! Lalena passed first grade at Glenn C. Marlow Elementary School, and is now a second grader. Glenn C. Marlow School serves the communities of Mills River and Fletcher, NC. For the summer she will attend Arden Seventh-Day Adventist Church FLAG Camp (FLAG = Fun, Learning, About, God). Tonight we attended Nash's High School graduation from West Henderson High School in Hendersonville, NC. It was a sight watching 260 graduates file onto the school's Johnson Field to Pomp and Circumstance. Nash will now start a...

Jun 7, 2018 - Day 4 - At Sherman's

Relaxing day at Cindy & Craig Sherman's. Jean ran errands with Cindy, which included picking up Nash's father, Kevin Lawson, at the Asheville International Airport. In preparation for some of the graduation activities was a run to Sam's Club for graduation cake and food and to a party store for graduation party supplies. Robin drove up from Palm Coast, FL - all by herself - and arrived about 4:30 PM. We had a nice family dinner - it is so great having our family all together to help celebrate Nash's graduation, which will be tomorrow...

Jun 6, 2018 - Day 3 - Lewisburg, WV to Fletcher, NC

Better travel day. Left the Hampton Inn in Lewisburg, WV at 7:30 AM after a good night's sleep and a continental breakfast. We had a few more sharp curves to bear - we passed many abandoned decrepit buildings, went through a few small unincorporated villages, and saw a Methodist Church in each little community. So many houses were built with bricks and many church and family name/address "signs" were inscribed or painted on big flat stones. To me they were difficult to read. Virginia didn't take too long to zip through - a whole 46 miles!...

Oct 17, 2017 - White Out

I got up early on Monday to drive up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway to catch sunrise. By the time I got to the overlook where I wanted to shoot, it was socked in with clouds, the wind was blowing about 30 mph, and it was raining. White out. I didn't even get out of the car. The sun had "risen" and the view over the mountains was white gauze. With nothing to shoot at this overlook, I started to head back toward Asheville to find something to shoot. I made a few stop on my way down, but good subject material was slim as the lower you get in...

Oct 16, 2017 - Works Done

I spent last week working at a Meritor truck axle manufacturing plant last week which was a different experience for me. Meritor supplies rear axles and differential for some of the big names in the trucking world - Paccar, Freightliner, Mack, Peterbuilt, etc. With work done, it's time to do some sightseeing in the Asheville area. On Sunday afternoon, we went to the North Carolina Arboretum. It was a beautiful day for walking around the grounds which are part of a 434-acre public garden within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest in the...

Oct 9, 2017 - Nate

When you travel in the summer and fall in the eastern US, it seems like you are going to run into a hurricane related weather event. Ever since Sandy in 2012, it seems like we've been in the wrong place at the wrong time. In 2015 we found ourselves on the Gulf Coast for TS Bill, in 2016, we trying to stay ahead of Hurricane Matthew as it moved along the SE coast. This year it's Nate. We caught the remnants of the storm here in Western NC yesterday. Not much wind, but a lot of rain and a bunch of tornado warnings on the iPhone. Fortunately...

Oct 7, 2017 - In the Appalachians

It was a long day on the road as we headed west across the state of North Carolina. Most of the route was on I40, not by design, but by mistake. We got a little misdirected around Raleigh as we were looking for US 64. We ran into some heavy rain as we got into central NC, but as we got into the mountains the rain stopped. We're expecting to get some heavy rain on Sunday and Monday from the remnants of Hurricane Nate. Hopefully it won't be too bad. We're staying in Fletcher, NC, just outside of Asheville. We'll be here for the week as I'll...
