May 2, 2019 - Raleigh and Edenton North Carolina

You sure don't want me as your gardener. What I said were lilacs turned out to be mountain laurel. I actually overslept this morning ( that NEVER happens) so I eliminated a stop in Chapel Hill to see the cathedral at Duke University and drove directly to Raleigh. This very simple Capitol Building didn't take long to tour. Except for the George Washington statue in the rotunda there isn't much adornment. I think this makes 40 capitol buildings that I have visited. Got to Edenton in time to drive to the water and stroll through the park. The...

Jun 9, 2013 - On the Road Again, Edenton NC

From Edenton, NC on the Albemarle Sound ... Sunday, June 9, 2013 We left home this morning around just before 8:00am. We packed the car with our "beach bound" items such as beach chairs, a cooler, beach towels, and of course our trusty bikes. We traveled primarily on Route 460 today, stopping for a delicious lunch at the Virginia Diner in Wakefield. We love traveling 460 because there are no trucks and little traffic to deal with. We arrived at Sam and Sandy's cottage on the Albemarle Sound in Edenton, NC about 2:00pm. We always love...

Oct 3, 2012 - Chowan River Paddle

The Chowan River is part of the second largest estuarine system in the U.S. and is a freshwater tidal river. Rocky Hock campground has a boat ramp leading to a narrow slough (pronounced “slew” supposedly) that leads to the river. However the slough was not real inviting and Bob had some concern about snakes so, we decided to drive to a public boat launch on the river at Cannon’s Ferry; a few miles away. The river is huge here; almost 2 miles across and its “black” tannin colored water is very deep. The river was an important navigable river...

Oct 2, 2012 - Rocky Hock?

October 2, 2012 Rocky Hock, North Carolina? Where, you say? Well, take a right at the Great Dismal Swamp, head west to the Chowan River and arrive at Rocky Hock Campground. Actually, we are about 8 miles north of Edenton, North Carolina. More about that town later. We left Chesapeake this morning and headed south on U.S. 17. We crossed the York River at Yorktown and the impressive James River near Hampton Roads, VA. The weather was cloudy and a little rainy. We planned to take VA 32 through Suffolk, VA but had to turn around before getting...

From beautiful Edenton, NC ... Saturday, June 9, 2012 We left home on Thursday and had a beautiful day for our drive to Edenton, NC. May 20, 2011 - Relaxing in Edenton, NC

From charming Edenton, NC … Friday, May 20, 2011 Charlie and I left home around 8:30am on Thursday morning and headed south. After having 14 out of 17 days of rain in the month of May, we finally had a beautiful day for travel. We drove all the way to Wakefield, Va where we had lunch at the Virginia Diner on Route 460. I ordered some good biscuits with Virginia country ham, and Charlie had a club sandwich with the same. Good stuff! After lunch, we crossed the highway over to Plantation Peanuts to purchase some goodies. Their prices are...

Mar 10, 2011 - Wilmington NC to Edenton NC

Woke to a cloudy day and hit the fitness room for 1/2 an hour, all the equipment worked this time. The hotel supplied a complimentary breakfast that had quite a good selection. All was going great until we were warming some boiled eggs when they self destructed and exploded inside the microwave, completely coating the inside with egg. Looks like toast was going to be the go. Today we intended to go further north towards Virginia. We travelled up Hwy 17 towards New Bern then onto Williamston. The weather was quite wet with periods of...

Sep 25, 2007 - Where Are We?

Bit misty this morning. We could be anywhere. We woke way too early at 4:00 a.m. and were first down for coffee and "biscuits" (Southern style breakfast food, like a cross between a very light roll and a scone). It felt a bit like the opening scenes of "Pulp Fiction" in the diner - where it looks like a normal day, but somehow you know something big is starting - we are going to call each other Pumpkin and Honeybun all day in tribute.
