As you drive north away from Charlotte Motor Speedway along Burton Smith Parkway you would think you are in Hendricksville. There must be 5 different Hendrick auto dealerships next door to each other selling any brand of car you need or want. Not more than 2 miles from the speedway is Hendricks Motor Sports complex. Hendrick Motorsports (HMS), originally named All Star Racing, is an American professional stock car racing team that currently competes in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The team, created in 1984 by Rick Hendrick, is...

2018 South Trip

Jul 17, 2018 - Tuesday, Concord NC

Today we visited my favorite race team, Stewart-Haas Racing, a Ford Team. When we got there I told the lady to tell Tony I was here but he was in Rossburg Ohio at Eldora Race Track for the Craftsman Truck Dirt Race. Only time the trucks run on dirt. The view thru the windows into the shop gives a bird’s eye view. I was amazed how clean everything is in the shop area, no grease monkeys there. They had a car from each driver, 4 Kevin Harvick, 10 Aric Almirola, 14 Clint Boyer, and 41 Kurt Bush. There also was a Formula 1 car that Hass races in...

Jul 16, 2018 - Monday, Concord NC

As we woke up today we smelled something like plastic burning but could not find anything. We did lose our hot water so it must be something with the tank. Thank goodness the RV service guy will be here this morning for the slide out awning. He did show up and fixed the awning but we will need a new one when we get home. Had him look at the water heater, thought the element may have burnt out again. That was not the problem, the thermostat burnt up and melted a wire so we got a new thermostat install with a new wire and now everything...

Jul 15, 2018 - Sunday, Charlotte NC

Our day will be spend at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte. We felt this would be a good day for the visit because during the week traffic would be crazy since it is located in downtown Charlotte. It was a very interesting visit to see all of the history since NASCAR started up 1948. NASCAR committed to building a Hall of Fame and on March 6, 2006, the City of Charlotte was selected as the location. Ground was broken for the $160 million facility on January 26, 2007, and it officially opened on May 11, 2010, with the inaugural...

Jul 14, 2018 - Saturday, Concord NC

Today we waited for a Mobile RV Service person to come and fix our slide out topper. Finally he called at 2 pm to say he would not be able to make it today but will be here at 9:30 am Monday. Not much you can do about it since he is the only person to return the call and it needs to be fixed. So we lost a day, but I did get to watch the NASCAR race that evening.

Jul 13, 2018 - Friday, Concord NC

We will be doing the Charlotte Motor Speedway track tour today. The tour started out at the main concourse where they load vans that will take us around the speedway grounds. There are 5 racetracks in this complex which cover 2000 acres of land. The track opened in 1960 which was only one track which cost 1.5 million dollars at the time. There have been many changes since opening day. More tracks have been added along with seating and premium boxes. The main track had seating for 171,000 people at one time but now is 94,000 seating. The...

Jul 12, 2018 - Thursday, Concord NC

After spending the night in Beckley WV we got on the road at 7:30 am to tackle the hills of West Virginia which is always fun in the motorhome towing the truck, but we made it. This was more like the drive we like, 234 miles and we park. We arrive at the Camping World RV Park at 12:00 pm. The campground is located at the Charlotte Motor Speedway so a person can walk to any of the 5 different tracks in the complex. It is a great campground with full hook-ups, level sites and very roomy. At $23.00 per night, this is a good deal. Got a...

Jun 16, 2014 - Back in North Carolina

Arrived Concord, NC on the 10th and spent a few days getting rested and rearranging our clothes because of warmer weather. Our warmer clothes needed to be put in our "basement bins" so as to have room to bring out the summer clothes. Just needed some down time to get our house in order. Then the festivities started Friday with all of us in town for Sydney's high school graduation on Saturday and Father's Day on Sunday. Today our son-in-law, David, grilled chicken outdoors for a send-off meal as our son, Nathan, and his family flew back to...

May 31, 2014 - Over The Wall Tour Today

From Tom Johnson Camping Center – Concord, NC Our rig sits in the city of Concord but the area for our adventures this week is Cabarrus County whose slogan is “Where Racing Lives”. This racing county is located halfway between the famed Outer Banks on the Atlantic Coastline and the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. The roots of NASCAR go back to the Prohibition Era when “moonshine runners” delivered illegal whisky with souped up cars outdriving the law. Today the official state sport of North Carolina is racing in unequaled...

Home Sweet RV - 2014

Sep 30, 2013 - Charlotte Motor Speedway

This is our last day in North Carolina as we are planning on heading south tomorrow..Really enjoyed a tour of Charlotte Motor Speedway and learned lots of facts from our driver. He took 9 of us in a van and cruised the track at 80 mph banking high on the straightaway and sliding low into the curves to give us an idea of what it is like. Really neat! Also, did 80mph on the 1/4 mile four lane dragway. I never realized there were so many parts to Charlotte's race track including a dirt track and other racing venues for sprint cars, etc. We...

Sep 26, 2013 - NASCAR

If you like NASCAR, you will like the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte. I was thinking I would spend a lot of time waiting for Dan to see everything but I really enjoyed the info on the various tracks and the behind the scenes look at what a team goes through to prepare for each week's race. We went on a car transporter complete with a lounge, weather station, and computer station. Also viewed the "war wagon" that is set up at pit road where they have everything ready for quick repairs and the crew chief watches the race action. After a 3...

Sep 25, 2013 - Concord, NC

Off we go for a couple of days in Concord, NC. We need to have some work done on our Freightliner chassis and normally we're too far away from their headquarters. However, we're passing right by the headquarters...what better place to have work done! The place we stayed was right next to the Concord Speedway and many others were VERY close by. One day we heard cars running around the tracks...pretty cool! And, no, we don't know much about NASCAR...it's just not one of our vices...LOL!
