HOME TO THE CHEROKEE people, who referred to this area as shaconage, meaning "blue like smoke" What is not new is that the white men took this land from the Cherokee and as a result the Eastern Band of Cherokee live on a reservation next to the park. This was my second visit to the area, the first being a few years back during the fall months with the wife. Jun 13, 2011 - Clingman's Dome

Today we headed over toward the border of Tennessee and North Carolina to see Clingman's Dome. We hoped that the weather would be nice enough and clear enough for it to pay to hike to the top of Clingman's Dome. Once we got there, we decided that it looked pretty good. It was clear at the bottom anyway! They tell us that it a half mile hike to the top of Clingman's Dome but they do agree that it is a really steep half mile. Once you get to the top and climb Clingman's Dome, you are at 6643' which is the highest point in Tennessee. It is...

Feb 28, 2007 - out of the woods

after two days exploring the smokies, i just slipped out the backdoor at townsend and, remarkably enough, found a little coffee shop with free wi-fi! i was just looking for coffee, even though its 3:30 PM. i woke up this morning to a chilly 20 degrees in the campground i stayed at. i was very disappointed trying to get a decent cup of coffee in gatlinburg this morning, so i quenched my thirst with some cold chocolate soy milk instead. nothing wrong with that! i hiked to two waterfalls and they were epic, the first i've ever seen. quite the...
