Sep 5, 2014 - Don't Pity The Pita

9/5/2014. Friday. Don't Pity The Pita! It rained all night and there is nothing better than sleeping with sounds of rain drops bouncing off a metal roof with air conditioner set at 70, an electric fan humming away and being all wrapped up in a big, warm comforter. By morning the sun was up and the air was cool and Enya was gambol ing in the forest...All's well with the world! The 4 of us took off for Chapel Hill this morning in wild anticipation of unknown events that may cross our path. Chapel Hill is the home of the University of North...

Jun 7, 2012 - Meeting Up With Marines

What a fabulous visit we had with our friends, Dennis and Barbara Mashburn in Jacksonville, North Carolina! Dennis and Dennis (it got really confusing when another Dennis showed up!) have known each other since they were stationed together at Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia from 1989-1991. Jacksonville is home to Camp Le Jeune and is also a base where Dennis was stationed in between his two tours in Hawaii. We left Charleston at 0315 (3:15 a.m. in civilian time) so that we could spend most of the day with the Mashburn’s...

May 21, 2010 - Leaving Chapel Hill

After 10 months, the time has come to leave Chapel Hill. I will miss the woods, the deer herd and the friends I have made here, but the road beckons. My first stop will be Greensboro, NC ~ just a short drive to the west ~ where the ACC Baseball Tournament will start in a few days. Georgia Tech is playing which means more time to spend with Thomas and enjoy some good college baseball. Before leaving, I took a sack full of chemo caps up to the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic at Duke where Richard had been treated. It gave me a chance to visit...

GYPSY GRAMMY

Apr 10, 2009 - Chapel Hill, NC - Camp Smith

We are back with Ingrid's brother and family. As always, we had a wonderful time. Of course we did the usual mass grocery shopping trips. Also, Ingrid and her brother, Tom, spent a few days of hard work (Tom's) landscaping. This is one of Ingrid's favorite things. Not only does she get to design plantings but she gets to tell her "little" brother what to do and watch him do it! Just like when they were kids!! :-) While here, we were blessed with lots of time with our newphew, Scott. We managed to take him out to lunch a few times and just...

Nov 10, 2008 - Chapel Hill, NC - Camp Smith

Back to Camp Smith where we'll stay until November 29. We'll celebrate a combined Thanksgiving and Christmas with Ingrid's family and then head toward Florida for the remainder of the holidays and early winter. We always enjoy our family time here. It's wonderful to be able to spend time with Scott and Samantha. We know this time is precious as they will soon be away with lives of their own. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at the Fisher's and then a beautiful campfire on Saturday night. Jim replaced the bedroom TV with a 22" HD LCD...

Nov 4, 2008 - Chapel Hill, NC - Camp Smith

We arrived on election day to a house divided - Ingrid, Jim and Samantha are Obama supporters and Tom, Lu and Scott are for McCain. As you can see, we were all equally represented! The drive from Max Meadows here was breath-taking. After an early a.m. rain, it became another perfect fall day, with sunshine, blue skies and peak fall color in the mountains just north of the North Carolina border where you look down into a valley and can see Pilot Mountain in the background. We usually miss the fall color because we travel later in November,...

May 22, 2008 - Chapel Hill, NC - Camp Smith

We had a wonderful time at Ingrid's brother's aka Camp Smith. The highlight of our stay was Scott's graduation party and graduation ceremony. Samantha's boyfriend's band played at the party and Samantha played the keyboards. The weather was perfect and everyone had a wonderful time. Other events while we were there - lots of long walks, encountered a dead copperhead in the road near the house, saw a black widow spider in the backyard garden, a black snake, and Ingrid was bitten by a tick.

May 6, 2008 - Chapel Hill, NC

May 4 & 5, 2008 One last day at the Stone Mountain Park. Sunday we saw some things that we had missed on Saturday, took the Skyride back up to the top (didn’t walk down), we then took the train ride around the base of the mtn., that was lame. The engine was so loud you couldn’t hear the commentary. We then went back to the Plantation, grabbed a small bite to eat and then drove over to the marina to take the 15 minute ride on the paddleboat. By this time we were about over it and called Pat & MaryAnn who met us back at the campsite. But...

Jan 1, 2008 - Chapel Hill, NC - Camp Smith

We revised our travel plans due to our coach problems. The good part is we get to stay at Camp Smith longer than planned. The bad, we had to cancel our Habitat for Humanity build. Oh well, there are always more builds to attend. We were able to attend two more of Scott's wrestling matches. His winning season continues. We are so proud of him. We also got to spend more time with both Scott and Samantha before they had to go back to school. This time is more precious to us than anything. In fact, Ingrid got to take Samantha back to the UNC...

Today we drove to Raleigh-Durham area and had the privilege of having supper with Steve and Sally Breedlove. They pastored Bethany Chapel for 7 years, 10 years ago. It was great to catch up with what they were doing now and find out where their children and grandchildren were. A great time.
