Sep 26, 2019 - Cary, NC

Another fun day visiting Catherine and James. We do get to visit Mike over face time since he's away at training. We walked James to day care this morning and picked him up around 3:30, so we could have a little down time. Went to Steinmart, Target, and Harris Teeter Grocery Store. When we walked down to get James, again he came running up to me. So sweet. We played until Catherine came home from work and went to Mod Pizza, where they make individual pizzas to order, assembly line like. Excellent pizza.

Sep 24, 2019 - Cary, NC

Charleston, SC to Cary, North Carolina Sept 24 We left Charleston a little after 9 am.  Seems like it's always an adventure with "Brandy" our Rand McNally GPS.  We'll try to reset it somehow when we get good wifi or at home so hopefully it will stop having glitches.  Luckily we knew where we were heading, as it took 20 minutes to synch enough to give us directions! Originally, it had us going up I-95 to 40 towards Raleigh.  Then it rerouted us after we stopped for gas, sending us west in Fayetteville, eventually up Rt 87, then back to the...

Dec 13, 2014 - Rod's Umstead Ruins Hike

Saturday was Rod’s annual Umstead Ruins Hike in William B. Umstead State Park. We started from the Reedy Creek entrance and Rod gave us a little history of the park before we set off on Company Mill Trail. We stopped in about a half-mile at a big pile of rocks right alongside the trail. These piles were made of rocks cleared from the land for farming. A lot of the labor came from children who moved rocks after school. Farming was difficult in the rocky land and everyone needed to help out. The poor soil for farming was one of the reasons...

Dec 14, 2013 - Rod's Umstead Ruins Hike

Today, I joined Rod for his annual Umstead Ruins hike, highlighting the history of William B. Umstead State Park. The forecast was for a dreary day, but the rain wasn’t supposed to start until around lunch time. We all met up at the Reedy Creek entrance to the park and started hiking shortly after 8. Our hike began along the Company Mill Trail and our first stop was just shortly after passing the intersection with Inspiration Trail. Rod pointed out a couple of rock piles just a few meters off the trail. Old homesteads used to be here and...

Jul 15, 2011 - Welcome to Raleigh-Durham North Carolina

Back on the road for the drive to Raleigh-Durham area. We are planning to check out Cary, North Carolina. It is rated #23 in Money Magazine Top 100 places to live. The weather is dramatically different than our travels so far. The sun is shining and it is warm but there is very little humidity and there is a lovely breeze. Bill says it reminds him of Portland on a beautiful day. There are pine trees and other flora and fauna that are similar to our area. At 10:15 we arrive and decide to boondock at the local Lowe's. It is the nicest Lowe's...

Nov 5, 2010 - On the edge in NC

Here we are literally on the geographic edge between piedmont foothills and the coastal plains. Once camp is set, we try not to let too much grass grow under our feet. Raven Rock State Park, Moncure, NC sounded like a good place to go for a walk. To our eyes the topography appears flat; not so when the mile long outcropping of rock requires more than sneakers. The Cape Fear River has time carved a deep trough on its way to the sea. Neverthless, the new visitor center entertained us on this drizzly day. Guess that will teach us to carry the...

Aug 19, 2009 - Pigeon Forge, TN and Knoxville, TN too!

Started the day waking up to rain in Pigeon Forge, TN but it was still a beautiful and fun town! We definitely want to go back very soon and stay longer since there were so many really cool attractions. Found out we had two nails in our back right tire so spent most of the morning trying to track down a place with a new tire for us. The only place within a few hours drive with the correct tire was in Knoxville, TN so we headed there but not until we got to ZORB first! It was wet, wild, and fun!! I think I screamed the whole way down the...

Dec 18, 2008 - Detour East

I'm back! Whatever the cyber glitch, all is well with this site today. Thank you to the support staff of the trip journal. We are on the last leg of returning to family for the holidays. The trip has been a smorgasbord of terrain, elevation, and weather. We chose the southerly route-staying under the wintry weather. By 0'dark:30(5:30) we were on the pavement heading east, calling it a day in Eagle Rock, TX. I had to chuckle at Corky-Texas is a BIG state with long desolate stretches in between civilization. He was so hungry by 8:00PM, he ate...
